Background
Birmingham International Academy (BIA) delivers International Foundation Pathways Presessional English and Insessional Academic English programmes for international students studying at the University of Birmingham. Foundation Year programmes are delivered at both the Edgbaston and Dubai Campuses.
BIA sits administratively within Academic Services but has a primary reporting line via the Dean to the ProVice Chancellor International and plays a key role in the Universitys international ambitions. The Academys teaching is researchinformed and staff are encouraged to take part in relevant conferences and CPD training sessions.
Role Summary
The post holder will be working within the Birmingham International Academy (BIA) a unit within the University of Birmingham that provides foundation programmes presessional programmes and insessional modules and short courses to international students whose first language is not English. The Learning Technologist will work closely with the Educational Technologist Manager and the BIA presessional project team in developing Canvas courses for teachers and students supporting both the Foundation Programme and the Insessional Programme. The role will focus on developing online teaching and learning environments within Canvas transferring teacherdeveloped materials to an online format and exploring innovative ways to enhance teaching and learning with technology. The post holder will provide essential input into projects where necessary and undertake additional tasks outlined in the main duties section below.
Main Duties
- Use knowledge skills and experience to support the pedagogic transformation across the three programme areas.
- Work closely with teachers administration students and management providing pedagogic advice guidance encouragement and support to deliver pedagogically transformed programmes.
- Undertake the creation of digital learning environments using the Universitys learning management system Canvas.
- Evaluate stakeholders experience of the digital content design and creation processes and review final content against the intentions identified in the storyboard/scripts/raw material.
- Assist in the appraisal from the student perspective including reviewing engagement data and feedback gathered from students during delivery.
- Redevelop new web pages using the Contensis software.
- Guide and support summer staff in using various platforms where and when needed.
- Support and collaborate with schools and the Dubai Campus where necessary
Required Knowledge Skills Qualifications Experience
You will need to evidence:
- Educated to Degree level (or equivalent level qualifications) where no equivalent qualification is held relevant work experience evidencing progression and development together with evidence of the transferable skills and ability to work at this level will normally be required.
- Significant practical experience in a similar role.
- A levels or an equivalent level 3 qualification such as a Level 3 NVQ or level 3 national diploma.
- GCSEs to a minimum of grade C/4 in English and Mathematics (or equivalent qualifications).
You will have:
- Expertise in designing and developing digital learning environments particularly using Canvas (or other Learning Management Systems).
- Experience with digital content creation including multimedia integration video editing and interactive learning resources.
- Proficiency in web development and content management systems such as Contensis.
- Understanding of user experience (UX) and accessibility in digital learning design.
- Ability to analyse engagement data and student feedback to improve learning experiences.
- Strong understanding of pedagogic transformation and best practices in technologyenhanced learning.
- Experience in instructional design and applying learning theories to digital education.
- Ability to evaluate and enhance assessment strategies for online and blended learning.
- Strong ability to work with academic and teaching staff administration and management to support their digital teaching needs.
- Experience in providing training guidance and support to educators and summer staff on using digital platforms effectively.
- Excellent communication skills to explain complex technical concepts in a clear and accessible manner.
- Ability to engage with various stakeholders including schools and the Dubai Campus.
- Ability to assess and evaluate digital learning experiences through feedback data analysis and usability testing.
- Strong problemsolving skills to troubleshoot technical issues and improve online learning environments.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines efficiently.
- Strong attention to detail to ensure highquality digital content.
- Capacity to work independently while also contributing effectively to team projects.
In addition to the above you should be able to demonstrate and/or evidence the following:
- Excellent communication skills with a provenability to communicate effectively with staff students and external stakeholders at a variety of different levels and from different professional backgrounds.
- Exemplary attention to detail and the ability to work confidentially using judgement and making appropriate decisions within the constraints of therole.
- The ability to act with tact and diplomacy when dealing with confidential matters concerning staff colleagues and students.
- Proven IT literacy with demonstrable proficiency in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of programmes.
- The ability to work to tight deadlines in a collaborative team environment.
- The ability to cope with change in a fast moving dynamic environment andbecoming comfortable with often changing University processes and regulations making them accessible to the members of your team.
- The ability to develop and manage service delivery capability to high standards.
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010 and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
Dimensions
The Learning Technologist will support the pedagogic transformation of programmes by designing highquality learning content assessments and educational experiences while providing pedagogic advice guidance encouragement and support to teachers administration students and management. The role involves planning designing and developing digital learning environments using Canvas ensuring the effective transition of teaching materials into an engaging online format. Collaboration is key working closely with the various programme teams and project team academic and teaching staff and other stakeholders as well as supporting the BIA programmes. Engaging with colleagues within BIA to enhance teaching and learning is essential. The role also includes reviewing and refining digital content based on stakeholder feedback assessing student engagement and feedback to improve online learning experiences and redeveloping and managing web pages using Contensis software. Additionally the Learning Technologist will provide support for digital content creation guide and support summer staff in using various platforms and report to the Manager of Insessional Programmes and Technology Enhanced Learning. The post holder will take responsibility for the development of digital content across presessional foundation and insessional programmes and will work closely with schools and the Dubai Campus where necessary.
Planning and Organising
You will be required to develop initiatives and approaches proactively identify and recommend improvements to educational technology and work across several programmes and projects as required.
Problem Solving and decision making
You will be expected to provide advice and proactively troubleshoot when issues arise.
