EVDD is customerobsessed entrepreneurial and datadriven and is dedicated to delivering industryleading customer experience for electric vehicle buyers and owners. Youll join an agile team of doers pioneering our EV future by working collaboratively staying focused on only what matters and delivering excellence day in and day out. Join us to make positive change by helping build a better world where every person is free to move and pursue their dreams.

The Senior Electric Powertrain Modeling and Optimization Engineer will contribute to all aspects of modeling and optimization of Fords next generation electric vehicle powertrains. You will oversee the development and implementation of parametric models for use in our inhouse powertrain optimization tools. You will run powertrain design studies to manage tradeoffs between mass cost and efficiency for Fords new electric vehicle platforms. This cross functional role will work closely with hardware engineers to understand their requirements and constraints provide quantitively guidance to define powertrain architectures and cascaded design goals for the next generation of efficient costeffective powertrain platforms at Ford.

Responsibilities

What youll do

  • Lead the development of parametric powertrain component models
  • Design and run large scale powertrain optimization studies to determine best technology choices and designs balancing mass cost and efficiency
  • Implement highdimensional input space multiobjective optimization algorithms for running powertrain optimization studies on high performance computing clusters
  • Develop allwheel drive torque split calculations that balance efficiency thermal and traction limit constraints
  • Develop EV battery models including loss mechanisms and their dynamic behaviors under load
  • Develop 3phase inverter models in the context of electric traction drives for the purpose of loss and thermal analysis over various drive cycles
  • Develop dynamic electric motor models for simulating pulsewidth modulation effects including nonlinear DQ flux models and other nonideal (nonsinusoidal) phenomenon
  • Implement and refine bearing and gear loss models in close collaboration with the geartrain hardware team
  • Work with the hardware test team to define test plans gather test data and correlate/improve existing models to close gaps between simulation and experimental results
  • Write and maintain software documentation unit tests and integration test to guarantee correct functionality of inhouse software tools

Qualifications

Youll have

  • M.S in mechanical/aerospace/thermal engineering control systems or mathematics
  • Excellent programming skills in the context of numerical computing including object oriented and functional programming paradigms
  • Strong understanding of theoretical principals and applied techniques for mathematical optimization
  • Ability to implement ground up numerical models across electric powertrain domains including batteries inverters motors and gearboxes
  • Familiarity with hardware characterization techniques for batteries inverters motors and gearboxes with a specific focus on component loss testing and validation

Even better you may have

  • PhD in mechanical/aerospace/thermal engineering control systems or mathematics
  • Experience with multiobjective optimization algorithms for problems with highdimensional input spaces (e.g. Bayesian optimization genetic algorithms particle swarm and other blackbox/surrogatebased optimizers)
  • Previous experience implementing custom finite element method solvers to solve magnetostatic and eddy current problems in electric motor design
  • Knowledge of advanced core loss modeling techniques for electric motors
  • Familiarity with vehicle traction control limits and their influence on EV powertrain front/rear torque split algorithms

You may not check every box or your experience may look a little different from what weve outlined but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company we encourage you to apply

As an established global company we offer the benefit of choice.
