The City of Charlottesville is seeking candidates to be considered for the position ofAdult Programming and Reference Services Managerfor Jefferson Madison Regional Librarywho are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesvilles Core Values of commitment integrity respect innovation and collaboration.

This position performs professional and managerial duties planning developing managing and participating in the daily operation of the Adult Programming and Reference Services Department at the JeffersonMadison Regional Librarys (JMRL) Central Library. Completes work with substantial discretion and within broad parameters. Reports to the Assistant Library Director.

Education Experience and Skills

Education and Experience:Candidates may qualify by demonstrating the required knowledge and skills outlined for the job through experience(s) other than formal education.


Preferred:
  • Extensive knowledge of electronic and print reference information services.

Certifications/Licenses/Other Requirements:
  • Required to successfully pass a preemployment background check.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS ABILITIES AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
Job Knowledge:
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles practices and techniques of modern public library operations; readers advisory; library system computer applications; and be wellversed in the digital environment.
Reading:
  • Advanced: ability to read and understand complex written materials such as books reviews scientific or technical journals abstracts financial reports and/or legal documents.
Writing:
  • Advanced: ability to prepare comprehensive reports and present ideas clearly and concisely. Ability to tailor writing to specific audiences and explain complex thoughts and ideas in writing.
Math:
  • Intermediate: Ability to deal with number systems simple formulas practical application of fractions percentages ratios/proportions and measurement.
Communication Skills:
  • Advanced: Ability to develop effective working relationships with library staff management and the public. Makes recommendations regarding policy development and implementation. Contact may require the consideration of different points of view to reach understanding and gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas and may involve support of controversial positions or the negotiation of sensitive issues or important presentations. Evaluates customer satisfaction develops cooperative associations and utilizes resources to continuously improve customer satisfaction.
Independence and DecisionMaking:
  • Requires Administrative Direction: Normally completes work with substantial discretion and within broad parameters defined by general organizational requirements and accepted practices. Overall results determine job performance.
Technical Skills:
  • Skilled: Comprehensive practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decisionmaking abilities appropriate to the assigned and apparent job responsibilities.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
