This position reports to a Correctional Lieutenant I at a minimum custody male correctional facility. Work is performed according to standard departmental procedures and supplemental instructions are received through the established chain of command. This positionis subject to rotation to various duty assignments and performs other duties relative to the defined level of work described.Job responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:
- Supervising officers assisting with planning work schedules assigning posts and the responsibilities for the officers activities relating to the custody and welfare of offenders in a state correctional facility.
- Assisting and instructing officers in the performance of their duties and complete performance evaluations.
- Disseminating and interpreting to officers and offenders rules and regulations formulated by the department.
- Making frequent tours of inspection to ascertain that officers are alert that discipline is being maintained and that assignments are being carried out.
- Supervising offender counts and maintenance of all records so that offenders may be accounted for at all times.
- Supervising periodic search of offender quarters for contraband.
- Conducting investigations and developing prisons operational emergency plans and post orders.
As of January 1 2025 there are new increase adjustments to the state pay plan which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission effective January 1 2025. The new salary range will be$35984 $62971. Prior applicants will remain under consideration and do no need to reapply.

If selected for this position a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience funding availability and internal equity. Based upon these factors a pay increase MAY result.
About Wake Correctional Center:
Wake Correctional Center in Raleigh is a minimumsecurity prison for adult males. It is primarily a work unit in that 80 percent of the offenders leave the facility each day for incentive wage work assignments in various state agencies in the Wake County area. Offenders also work at other area adult correctional facilities and Correction Enterprises operations. There are also offenders nearing their release date that participate on the work release program leaving the facility to work for businesses in the community. Incentive wage work assignments are also available at the prison in the food service clothes house janitorial landscaping maintenance canteen and recreation areas.
Wake Technical Community College works with the prison to provide fulltime vocational classes in Certified Communications Heating/Air Conditioning and Electrical Wiring. Parttime classes in Blueprint Reading and Horticulture are also available. Educational classes in GED collegelevel courses and college correspondence classes are available.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diplomaANDtwo years of experience as a Correctional Officer; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualifications: Must be eligible for certification by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education & Training Standards Commission.
