Job Description

The Resource Center (RC) is Wesleyan Universitys multicultural center and has a mission to support empower and engage students with underrepresented and marginalized identities.

By collaborating with students to promote social justice programming community development and intersectional education and awareness initiatives on campus the RC strives to provide a safe and inclusive environment for students from all identities backgrounds and experiences to connect learn organize and lead.

The RCs main areas of focus are race ethnicity nationality gender sexuality socioeconomic status and disability.

Reporting to the Director of The Resource Center the Associate Director implements programming that creates and sustains an inclusive and supportive campus climate for a wide range of student affinity groups.

In addition to supporting the programs and initiatives of The RC the Associate Director plays a role in providing programmatic oversight and guidance to student affinity groups particularly around heritage month activities.

The position supports our First Things First (FTF) program which centers firstgeneration and limitedincome students and is one of our Pathways to Inclusive Education (PIE) programs.

Responsibilities include:

Multicultural Programs and Initiatives

  • Supporting studentled initiatives that foster community development and greater awareness/understanding of student identities and backgrounds including organizing heritage month and awareness week programming.
  • Managing the development of training activities and spaces that afford students the opportunities to expand knowledge and skills necessary to successfully navigate diverse environments.
  • Serving as a primary resource and advocatefor multicultural student awareness and community development issues.
  • Serving as a primary advisor to student leaders and organizations with affinity groups related to social justice.
  • Collaborating in the development and implementation of the First Things First preorientation program that aids firstgeneration/lowincome students with transitioning into Wesleyan University.
  • Collaborating across campus stakeholders and amongst the Office for Equity and Inclusion to actively engage the Wesleyan community in important and challenging initiatives about equity and inclusion.

Supervision and Leadership

  • Supervising training and evaluating The RC student interns (staff of 20 to develop and implement programs and services that foster intercultural competencies among students faculty and staff.
  • Directing student programming and cultivating effective partnerships with student organizations.
  • Collaborating with staff and faculty partners on implementing the mission and programming of The RC.

Administration

  • Collaborating with the Director of The RC in the development implementation and upkeep of all Resource Center operations programs and services.
  • Managing the preparation of reports and assessments that enable campus stakeholders to understand what The RC is accomplishing and how it may be able to further develop.
  • Managing tracking and facilitating referrals to appropriate academic and/or administrative departments.
  • Special projects as assigned.

This position is required to work on campus.

(Relocation assistance to CT is available for those who qualify).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Earned bachelors degree and a minimum of 5 years of fulltime experience facilitating events programming or workshops; or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.
  • Demonstrated excellent understanding of student development theory and social justice work.
  • Demonstrated excellent problemsolving interpersonal communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated competency designing developing and creating cocurricular programming for diverse and intersectional communities.
  • Demonstrated experience facilitating multicultural and social justice education workshops and training.
  • Demonstrated competency working across cultural differences and leading conversations related to identity power and human differences.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a primary resource advocate and advisor on multicultural awareness community development issues and social justice to student leaders and affinity organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience balancing responsibilities as a student advisor and advocate for student needs.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including evenings nights and weekends as needed especially during fall and spring semesters. These needs are particularly pronounced during Orientation/Opening Days and during Commencement.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Earned masters degree focused on higher education administration student identity development multicultural counseling or other related fields.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising student staff.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting program assessments and quantifying the outcomes of multicultural initiatives.
