The Alaska Department of Fish and Game Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 located in Sand Point!

What you will be doing:
This Fish and Wildlife Technician 3 position will serve as a crewmember of the Westward Region commercial catch sampling team in Sand Point or False Pass Alaska. The successful applicant will be responsible for sampling commercially harvested salmon in processing facilities and assisting project biologists in managing the entry of salmon data into the regional database. This position is staffed for approximately 23 months from June through August.

This commercial catch sampling position assists in the collection of biological data from commercial salmon harvest. The information gathered will be used to commercial management strategies and to inform managers and the public origin of commercially caught chum salmon in the Alaska Peninsula Management Area.

The working environment you can expect:
  • Commercial catch sampling work is performed on the docks and inside of commercial processing plants often in confined cold slippery and wet conditions. This position requires a flexible schedule that may include night work and is dependent on commercial fishing periods and processing plant operations. The seasonal fishing schedule is known ahead of time so crew members can plan workdays and days off but the actual working hours and time of work must be flexible and is often unpredictable.
  • The technician must be available for irregular working hours including weekends and holidays.
  • This position is eligible for overtime.
  • This position is physically demanding and requires bending lifting and walking up and down docks for extended periods.
  • This position requires travel to remote processing facilities.
Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an individual with the following competencies/knowledge skills and abilities:
  • Experience living and working in remote rural Alaskan communities
  • Experience collecting organizing and summarizing biological samples and data particularly from commercially harvested salmon.
  • Excellent communication interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Experience working as part of a team or a team leader
  • Ability and willingness to have a flexible and nontraditional (nighttime) work schedule within designated timelines as communicated by supervisors
  • Experience using electronic databases and Microsoft Office (including Word and Excel) for word processing and data entry and organization.
  • This position requires the ability to repetitively lift fish and gear up to 50 pounds.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher guide or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish wildlife outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience involving fish or wildlife research management or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals insects inclement weather low level flying travel by boat or skiff or contact with and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses vessels or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
High school diploma equivalent means one of the following: 1 a GED (general educational development); 2 completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours 16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3 acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4 highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture biology ichthyology microbiology ornithology and zoology.
