Job Description

We have an opening for a Postdoctoral Research Staff Member to conduct basic and applied research. You will contribute to advances in computational models of physical systems to enable significant advances in our overall capabilities to address important problems. The work brings together computational mechanics of materials high performance computing and innovative connections to experimental methods. Capabilities are deployed both for focused studies and for treatment of complex coupled phenomena in more integrated applications. This position is in the Computational Engineering Division (CED) within the Engineering Directorate.

You will

  • Conduct research in a relevant discipline within computational engineering including the development of mathematical and computational models for material strength and damage.
  • Work with experimentalists on designing implementing and analyzing relevant experiments.
  • Organize analyze and present data from research.
  • Prepare technical reports.
  • Contribute to and actively participate in the conception design and of research to address defined problems.
  • Pursue independent (but complementary) research interests and interact with a broad spectrum of engineers and scientists internally and externally to the Laboratory.
  • Collaborate with others in a multidisciplinary team environment to accomplish research goals.
  • Publish research results in peerreviewed scientific or technical journals and present results at external conferences seminars and/or technical meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Qlevel security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship. 
  • PhD degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in a field related to solid mechanics or materials sciences.
  • Experience with software development using scripting languages or C/C/Fortran in a UNIX environment.
  • Experience developing independent research projects as demonstrated through publication of peerreviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
  • Effective initiative and interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative multidisciplinary team environment.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience with engineering analysis typically through finite element and/or finite volume techniques and associated productivity tools.
  • Familiarity with productivity tools for team software development environments.
  • Ability to participate meaningfully in experimental activities.

This is a Postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of extension to a maximum of three years open to those who have been awarded a PhD at time of hire date.
