Position Summary
MSU Denver is seeking applicants to serve as academic advisors for the students at our institution. We are currently hiring an advisor either an Academic Advisor I or an Academic Advisor II.
The Academic Advisor I at MSU Denver is primarily responsible for advising a caseload of students on degree requirements and providing longterm degree planning. Academic advisors help students develop educational goals and define a career path through use of a variety of advising approaches and tools. Further they monitor student progress making targeted outreach to students to address potential obstacles in retention and graduation. Academic advisors also participate in Universitywide and unitspecific advising initiatives.
In addition to the responsibilities above the Academic Advisor II at MSU Denver works with advising leadership immediate supervisors and faculty and/or staff where appropriate to understand advising and retention data and student success implementation strategies. Assisting with and/or participating in recruiting events may also be required.
Responsibilities
Examples of Work Performed
Provide Advising Services to Students
- Conduct advising sessions with students assist with course selection scheduling and registration questions using advisingbased technology
- Utilize knowledge of curriculum to help students with longterm degree planning
- Prepare and maintain advising documentation in the current student success/customer management system
- Refer students to appropriate University resources
- Provide basic information related to career planning financial literacy admissions and other applicable information related to student needs
- Teach students about electronic advising and registration tools and how to best utilize them for success (e.g. Degree Progress Reports Student Hub Student Success Collaborative suite etc.
- Participates in New Student Orientation sessions and Registration events.
- Participation in recruiting events may be required
Monitor Progress and Retention of Assigned Students
- Utilize advisingbased systems to track and engage assigned students who are atrisk of not being retained (Early Alert)
- Deliver appropriate studentcentered outreach
- Participate in retention initiatives
Professional Development
- Begin or continue building knowledge of advising techniques and approaches
- Participate in universitywide and unit specific advising professional development opportunities (e.g. Advising retreats NACADA webinars conferences etc.
- Serve on committees councils taskforces etc. where appropriate

Required Qualifications
Academic Advisor I
- Bachelors degree
- Demonstrated experience in a professional setting helping others reach their academic professional and/or personal goals
- Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a diverse community (students faculty staff alumni and parents)
- Demonstrated problemsolving prioritizing and preparation skills
Academic Advisor II
- Bachelors degree and three years experience as a fulltime academic advisor
- Experience using computerbased student information system(s) (e.g. Ellucian Banner PeopleSoft CampusVue etc.
- Demonstrated experience with advising techniques or approaches at an accredited institution
- Demonstrated ability to relate effectively to a diverse university community (students faculty staff alumni and parents)
- Demonstrated problemsolving skills
Preferred Qualifications
Academic Advisor I
- Masters degree in either Higher Education College Personnel Counseling or an academic discipline
- Experience using computerbased student information system(s) (e.g. Ellucian Banner PeopleSoft CampusVue etc.
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable
- Experience working with and/or being sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population
Academic Advisor II
- Masters degree in either Higher Education College Personnel Counseling or an academic discipline
- Demonstrated experience in accessing understanding and/or using student data for successful outcomes
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) proficiency desirable
- Experience working with and/or being sensitive to the educational needs of a diverse urban population
- Experience assisting with developing and/or leading trainings workshops or presentations
Schedule Information
- Fulltime
- Exempt
- Days of Week: Monday Friday 8:00 am 5:00 pm
- Evenings and Weekend Work: Weekend work on rare occasion for orientations
- Schedule: Hybrid schedule flexibility with in person work as well as some remote opportunities subject to supervisor approval and program needs.
- Travel: For professional development opportunities only
Salary for Announcement
Under Colorado law MSU Denver is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account a variety of factors including but not limited to experience skills knowledge abilities education licensure and certifications analysis of internal equity and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
The salary ranges that the University reasonably expects to pay for these positions are established at:
Academic Advisor I: $49000 $51000
Academic Advisor II: $50000 $55000
This position is paid monthly and is eligible for MSU Denver benefits.
