Position Description


Lifeguard/Seasonal (Temporary Agency) General Summary:

Provides protection of life on county beaches basic life support assistance on an emergency basis for the care and treatment of sick and injured person(s) and assists with enforcement of safety rules and regulations. Provide high quality customer service to all patrons visitors and guests.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Observe swimming activities and safety of the public to comply with safety guidelines.
  • Performs necessary duties to ensure the beach area is free of trash and debris.
  • Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces beach regulations and water safety policies.
  • Administers first aid in the event of injury rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration if necessary.
  • Evaluates conditions for safety and initiates aquatics emergency action plan as required.
  • Inspects facilities equipment and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.
  • Maintains log of daily procedures and completes reports and forms associated with patient care.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

Education/Certification:

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
  • Knowledge and ability to evaluate water conditions at the beach to determine any potential dangers or hazards.
  • Ability to adjust programs as necessary to ensure the safety of the visitors and other staff.
  • Swimming proficiency and comfort in all types of water conditions.
  • Ability to judge and evaluate evolving dynamics of individuals participating in aquatic activities to immediately assess their capabilities and threats to their safety.
  • Knowledge of onsite protocols operational procedures and safety policies.
  • Knowledge of methods and techniques for providing onsite emergency medical services.
  • Ability of speaking and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information; includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors. Includes the giving of directions information and/or instructions to others.
  • Ability to tactfully and effectively interact with the public and with coworkers.
  • Ability to apply principles of emergency medicine and common sense understanding to carry out detailed and involved written or oral instructions; to deal with problems involving variables in or from standardized situations; to make independent judgments in the absence of supervisor.
  • Ability to comprehend and interpret received information.

General Information

Work Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to sit for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to remain alert and perform rigorous physical activity for long periods of time with little rest and under adverse weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work for sustained periods of exposure to outside atmospheric conditions.
  • Must be able to see and hear sufficiently well to identify and rescue troubled swimmers within a designated swimming area.
  • Must be able to exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently or in excess of 25 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Must be able to ascend or descend ladders stairs scaffolding ramps poles and the like using feet and legs or hands and arms.
  • Must be able to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking standing crouching or running on narrow slippery or erratically moving surfaces or when in water.
  • Must be able to bend downward and forward by bending spine at the waist requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Must be able to bend legs at knees to come to rest on knee(s).
  • Must be able to bend body downward and forward by bending legs and spine.
  • Must be able to move about on hands and knees or hands and feet.
  • Must be able to reach extending hand(s) in any direction.
  • Must be able to handle seize hold grasp turn or otherwise work with hand(s).
  • Must be able to finger pick pinch or otherwise work primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm.
