VDOTs South Hill Residency is seeking experienced individuals interested in joining our team who can operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws trimming and chipping machines dump truck loader backhoe motor grader tractor with attachments) and perform manual labor. We Currently have Operator Maintenance positions available at Sturgeonville AHQ (Brunswick County) Kenbridge AHQ (Lunenburg County) Victoria AHQ (Lunenburg) and Lawrenceville AHQ (Brunswick County).

As an Operator Maintenance you will:
Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions.
Attend work zone training prepare work zones and perform traffic control.
Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards make suggestions for improvement wear proper personal protection equipment maintain current knowledge of safety rules regulations laws and use equipment properly and safely.
Participate as a working team member performing manual labor including clearing drainage cutting brush pothole patching and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects.
Complete pretrip inspections perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date at any locations within the South Hill Residency.

VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications

Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
Safety shoes required.
Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
Skill in the operation and maintenance of light medium and heavyduty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment materials methods and procedures.

Additional Considerations

Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal storms and accident cleanup.
Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
A combination of training experience or education in Maintenance Vehicle Operations or related field desired.
Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
Valid Commercial Drivers License with appropriate endorsements.

Special Instructions

Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public.

Verification of work history DMV records check and a fingerprintbased criminal history check will be conducted prior to first day of employment. Preemployment physical will be required to include a drug screen for CLP or CDL holders. Safety shoes are required in performance of job duties which are a reimbursable item. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available.

Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entrylevel drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA approved EntryLevel Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours on average of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.
