Job Description

Under general supervision the Recreation Coordinator supervises plans coordinates develops and evaluates recreation programs in the areas of Recreation Facilities and Recreation Programs. Essential functions include:

  • Supervising staff and daily operations of a community recreation center or a citywide recreation service area (such as Community Services Cultural Arts Neighborhood Enrichment Services Outdoor Recreation Sports & Athletics Support Services and Aquatics). 
  • Conducting training and informational meetings with staff and volunteers concerning policies procedures rules and regulations related to their specific assigned activities at a community recreation center.
  • Analyzing community and group recreational needs (in selecting and adapting programs to meet those needs in procuring the materials and resources necessary for implementing recreation programs and in making the most effective use of the facilities and staff).
  • Designing curricula to meet community needs.
  • Recruiting interviewing and training staff for program sections.
  • Planning designing and coordinating the production of publicity materials; preparing press releases and news articles for community papers agendas and presentations for community meetings.
  • Coordinating and staffing a community recreation council to the community recreation center.
  • Assisting in the pursuit of additional resources for programs through grant applications solicitation of donations and other fundraising activities.
  • Compiling data preparing various reports such as attendance schedules expenses and monitoring the centers or program areas annual operating budget.
  • Coordinating activities and approving facility use by outside groups under departmental policies.
  • Performing additional duties as required.

Please note that incumbents in this classification may be required to perform duties as listed in the class specification 3286Recreation Coordinator City and County of San Francisco. 


Qualifications :

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:
Possession of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university; AND

Experience:
4000 hours of experience leading recreational activities performing recreational support services and/or recreational facility operations.

Substitution:
Additional experience as described above may be substituted for the required degree on a year for year basis. Thirty 30 semester units or fortyfive 45 quarter units equal to 2000 hours.

Possession of a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Recreation Recreation Administration Business Management Physical Education/Kinesiology Performing Arts or Visual Arts may substitute for 2000 hours of experience as described above.

Note: Some positions may require special conditions in addition to the standard minimum qualifications.

Selection Procedures
After application submission candidates deemed qualified must complete all subsequent steps to advance in this selection process which includes the following: 

3286 Recreation Subtest (Weight: 60:
Candidates who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in a written multiplechoice examination that is designed to determine their relative knowledge skill and ability levels in job related areas including but not limited to: knowledge of modern principles and practices of outcomebased recreation program planning and delivery; knowledge of principles and practices of multipurpose facility management; knowledge of budget practices; knowledge of modern office procedures and equipment including computers; knowledge of outreach and promotion principles and practices; and knowledge of pertinent federal state and local laws. Oral and written communication abilities may be evaluated during the hiring process.

Basic Supervisory Exam (Weight: 40:
Candidates will be invited to participate in a written multiplechoice examination that is designed to measure basic knowledge of various supervisory practices and procedures (e.g. directing counseling guiding evaluating motivating disciplining developing and training subordinates delegation etc. as well as customer service and reading comprehension.

This is a standardized examination and therefore test questions and test answers are not available for public inspection or review.

The Basic Supervisory Exam will be administered either on a computer or in paper format. The type of format will depend on the size of the qualified applicant pool. Qualified candidates will be notified of the type of exam format in their exam appointment notification.

The score you achieve on this examination shall be valid and banked for three years starting from the date of the examination. This means that during this threeyear time period you will not be required to take this test again should you apply and be found eligible for a future announcement for which this particular test is used. Please note this test is used for other supervisory classes therefore your test score may be applied to one or more of these classes if you choose to apply to future recruitments. If the test for this future announcement is held within one year of the date of this examination your score will be automatically applied to that announcement. However after one year you have the option to either (a) apply your test score to the other announcement or (b) retake the test. Retesting is permitted no sooner than one year from the date of the examination and only in association with your eligibility for another announcement for which this test is used. Please note that should you retest your retest score would become your official score since it is the most recent.

Date of Examination: Qualified applicants will be notified by email of the exact time date and location of the examination.

NOTE: A passing score must be achieved on both the Recreation Subtest and Basic Supervisory Exam in order to be placed/ranked on the Eligible List/Score Report. Candidates will be placed on the eligible list/score report in rank order according to their final score.

Candidate scores on this examination may also be applied to other announcements involving other job titles when directed by the Human Resources Director.


Additional Information :

Eligible List/Score Report: 
A confidential eligible list of applicant names that have passed the civil service examination process will be created and used for certification purposes only. An examination score report will be established so applicants can view the ranks final scores and number of eligible candidates. Applicant information including names of applicants on the eligible list shall not be made public unless required by law. However an eligible list shall be made available for public inspection upon request once the eligible list is exhausted or expired and referrals resolved. The eligible list/score report resulting from this civil service examination process is subject to change after adoption (e.g. as a result of appeals) as directed by the Human Resources Director or the Civil Service Commission. 

Eligible List Duration:
The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be of twelve 12 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director. 

Certification Rule: The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be Rule of Three. Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
