Job Description

Position Summary
A Materials Science Electron Microscopist position is available at Indiana University Bloomington. This position is part of the IUB Electron Microscopy Center / which is a core facility that serves both the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses of Indiana University. The IUB EMC currently has four Ph.D. level staff that operate five electron microscopes to further the research mission of the university with three focus areas in materials science biological science and cryo TEM life science applications. Instruments in our center include an FEI Teneo Volume Scope SBF SEM a JEOL 1010 TEM a JEOL 1400plus cryo TEM a cryoequipped JEOL 3200FS (S) TEM and a ThermoFisher Talos Arctica cryo TEM . The JEOL 1400plus is equipped with a Gatan OneView CMOS camera that can record 4k x 4k CCD images at 25 fps (and smaller areas of the sensor as fast as 300 fps). It also has an EDX system containing an XMaxN SSD detector from Oxford Instruments. The JEOL 3200FS is equipped with a Gatan UltraScan 4000 CCD camera and a DE64 8k x 8k direct electron detection camera capable of fullframe streaming at up to 46 fps as well as an Oxford EDX detector. In summer 2023 we will be installing a JEOL NEOARM Atomic Resolution Analytical Electron Microscope which features aberration correction and a cold field emission gun. The staff in our center each have focus areas for working with users and instrumentation but are also crosstrained in other areas to provide back up for each other and to increase collaboration and efficiency in the center. This available position is for a scientist with experience and interest in materials science studies which will mainly make use of the JEOL 1400plus JEOL 3200FS and JEOL NEOARM instruments. This position is useroriented so the primary duties are related to interacting with users developing new experiments supporting experiments and problem solving in support of user research. Primary Responsibilities: Assist users with experiments on the JEOL 1400plus JEOL 3200FS and JEOL NEOARM instruments including providing user training and providing assistance during experiments and with data analysis. Consult with current and potential users on new projects including the acquisition of preliminary data. Assist in maintaining the instruments and interface with service engineers (each of the instruments has an active service contract). Additional duties include: Weekly benchmark and optimize microscope performance for data collection Participate in methods development/optimization for TEM EDX electron diffraction STEM and EELS . Maintain records of daily operations in the facility Data management and storage. Assist in proposal writing to access advanced EM capabilities or to upgrade IU EMC instrumentation. IU Bloomington is located in the rolling hills and hardwood forests of southern Indiana. Bloomington is a liberal university town with a vibrant music and arts scene but without the crowds and traffic of a large city. Indianapolis Cincinnati St. Louis and Chicago are all within a fourhour drive.
