PRIMARY PURPOSE:

Responsible for onsite leadership of vehicle mechanics and mechanic assistants. Perform major mechanical repairs with minimal supervision to ensure proper performance and safety of district vehicles. Perform assigned work following established policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum Education/Certification:

High school diploma or equivalent

Certifications / License:

Clear and valid Texas Drivers License & CDL preferred

ASE Certificationpreferred

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Effective communication with department heads and others in scheduling various maintenance repairs

Ability to maintain accurate records for labor materials work order completion and equipment/tool inventory

General technical knowledge in mechanical repair of various equipment

Read and interpret documents such as safety rules operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals

Ability to diagnose mechanical problems and perform repairs independently

Work Conditions:

Tools/Equipment Used: Automotive diagnostic equipment; wheel balancing equipment; tire repairing equipment; small hand tools; power tools; welding torch; torque wrench; jack and lift equipment; computer and peripherals; school bus and district vehicles

Posture: Moderate standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting; work in tiring and uncomfortable positions
Motion: Moderate walking; frequent climbing grasping/squeezing wrist flexion/extension and overhead reaching; moderate driving
Lifting: Heavy lifting and carrying 45 pounds and over) on a daily basis
Environment: Work outside and inside on slippery or uneven walking surfaces; frequent exposure to extreme hot and cold temperatures dust toxic chemicals and materials noise vibration and electrical hazards; work around machinery with moving parts; may work in tight or enclosed spaces; may work alone; regularly work irregular hours; occasional prolonged hours; maintain emotional control under stress
Regular attendance is an essential function.

Minimum Experience:

Five years experience in automotive repair

One year of supervisory experience

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

  1. Rebuild replace or repair major vehicle components assemblies and systems as well as allied equipment.
  2. Perform major and minor mechanical repairs preventative maintenance diagnostics and inspections on all district vehicles in a timely and efficient manner and without supervision.
  3. Assign work to vehicle mechanics and mechanic assistants and inspect completed work for quality.
  4. Obtain estimating for part costs and procure proper materials and supplies for completion of the work order.
  5. Maintain accurate and uptodate records for preventive maintenance labor materials work order completion and equipment/tool inventory.
  6. Estimate time and materials required to perform major repairs.
  7. Take initiative in identifying and resolving various maintenance repair problems related to the fleet maintenance to ensure completion of a job in a timely manner.
  8. Maintain accountability of tools equipment and supplies assigned to the work crews.
  9. Initiate work production for vehicle repairs including job planning through job completion.
  10. Help train mechanics and mechanic assistants.
  11. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing. Operate tools equipment and machinery according to prescribed safety procedures.
  12. Ensure shop equipment and tools are in safe operating condition.
  13. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and promptly report any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.
  14. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
  15. Ensure compliance with all local policies and state and federal statutes including the Educator Code of Ethics.
  16. Perform such other tasks and accepts such other responsibilities as may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Automotive Mechanic staff and Industrial Mechanic staff
