The Core provides a variety of HIV characterization services such as nucleic acid isolation viral stock propagation and viral genome sequencing to researchers both within Ragon and to the HIV research community at large. Additionally the Core gives users access to topofthe line equipment and to the specific expertise necessary to properly design and safely execute HIV research in BSL2 general direction from the Associate Director the Research Specialist will directly manage the scientific financial and procedural aspects of the Core (http://ragoninstitute/research/services/virology/ and will be responsible for a variety of research projects for the Allen Lab (http://ragoninstitute/portfolioitem/allenlab/. As the demand for Core services increases they will also be responsible for the training and oversight of 12 : Serve as primary contact for customers vendors and technicians for all Virology Core matters Responsible for carrying out and/or overseeing all service requests in a timely and GCLP manner Have hands on experience with and technical knowledge of both molecular and tissue culture work including but not limited to: viral propagation of molecular clones ELISA nucleic acid isolations qPCR assays and sequencing operations. Responsible for process improvement protocol development and recruitment of innovative technologies. Services in development include but are not limited to Roche 454 and Illumina MiSeq NGS platforms viral propagation of clinical isolates HCV viral load assays management of specialized equipment (Bioanalyzer liquid handler automated nucleic acid isolation platform) Responsible for inventory service contract oversight QA/QC web site maintenance Per the PI of the research lab (Dr. Allen) independently perform nonroutine highly specialized experimental procedures and participate in the design and modification of research protocols. Troubleshoot experiments and provide guidance to technicians technologists and research fellows Performs other duties as assigned by the Associate Director of the Core and the PI Qualifications: Ph.D. or Masters in biology/biotechnology required Excellent analytical organizational and communication skills Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with individuals at all levels across the institute. Ability to multitask prioritize and complete projects in timely manner
