Job Description Summary
The Center for the Advancement of Teaching (CAT) at Wake Forest University seeks an Assistant Director to support our mission (cat.wfu/about/ourmission) of advancing evidenceinformed teaching and learning across the institution. Working closely with the Director for Educational Development and the Associate Director for Curriculum Development and Assessment the Assistant Director will contribute to all major areas of CAT work: empowering individual educators supporting academic units and evaluating the effectiveness of CAT programs. As a staff role with potential for a secondary nontenuretrack faculty appointment this opportunity includes a complete benefits package from WFU (hr.wfu/benefits) along with generous funding for professional development.Candidates should submit a cover letter CV philosophy of educational development teaching philosophy and evidence of teaching effectiveness by March 31st for priority consideration. Job Description
Essential Functions:
- Contributes to programs and services that support individual educators as they develop foundational teaching skills discover and evaluate new teaching strategies and contribute to the scholarship of teaching and learning (e.g. consultations observations workshops reading groups course design institutes and faculty learning communities).
- Contributes to programs and services that support academic units as they build structures set policies and allocate resources to advance teaching priorities across the university (e.g. curriculum development; learning space design; and the assessment of teaching).
- Contributes to the evaluation of center programs and services through assessment planning data collection analysis of results and the implementation of evidenceinformed improvements.
- Contributes to institutional teaching initiatives aligned with the universitys strategic framework framework.wfu: inclusive pedagogy experiential learning and educating character.
- Advances our collective understanding of teaching learning and educational development in higher education through traditional scholarship and informal contributions to the field (e.g. invited presentations podcasts and blogs).
- Develops pedagogical expertise through regular teaching professional development activities (workshops networking society memberships) and service to organizations advancing evidenceinformed teaching in higher education.
Required Education Knowledge Skills Abilities:
- Ph.D. or Ed.D. with evidence of effective universitylevel teaching.
- 24 years experience in educational development or equivalent work.
- Experience supporting educators in oneonone conversations and group learning activities.
- Experience collaborating with diverse populations in higher education settings.
- Experience managing multiple concurrent projects.
- Knowledge of learning theory evidencebased pedagogy and assessment principles.
- Ability to facilitate effective consultations with educators and academic leaders.
- Ability to lead effective group learning activities for educators and academic departments.
- Commitment to inclusive ethical and reflective practice.
- Demonstrated potential to contribute to the universitys teaching and learning priorities (e.g. inclusive pedagogy experiential learning or leadership and character education).
Preferred Education Knowledge Skills Abilities:
- Experience working within a teaching center or related unit.
- Experience designing and leading educational development programs or initiatives.
- Experience leading complex projects that require collaboration across multiple units.
- Experience with teaching initiatives related to the universitys strategic priorities (e.g. inclusive pedagogy experiential learning or leadership and character education).
- Experience contributing to scholarly conversations about teaching and learning through research public scholarship and professional service.
- Experience with social science research design and data analysis particularly in contexts where data collection and experimental controls are difficult.
- Proficiency with survey and database tools (e.g. Qualtrics Airtable).
- Familiarity with institutional review board (IRB) policies and procedures
Accountabilities:
- The position emphasizes collaboration and contributions to established programs through partnerships across the institution. While the role does not include supervisory responsibilities the Assistant Director will work closely with faculty and staff to support organizational and institutional development initiatives.
- Responsible for own work.
Physical Requirements:
- The position requires extended stationary work including up to eight hours a day at a desk and one to twohour meetings. It also involves moving across campus to attend meetings or engage with faculty members as needed.
Environmental Conditions:
- Work is conducted in individual offices with frosted glass walls. While these offices provide physical separation moderate noise levels from conversations and meetings travel through the space throughout the day. The role may also involve occasional travel to conferences or workrelated events requiring work outside the primary office setting.
Regularly Scheduled Hours:
- Standard business hours 37.5 hours per week from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a onehour lunch Monday through Friday) with flexibility required for occasional evening/weekend programs.
Flexible Work Eligibility:
- Position requires a minimum of 24 hours per week on campus. Schedule of oncampus hours is flexible and determined in coordination with supervisor to ensure appropriate coverage for consultations workshops and team collaboration. The remaining hours may be worked remotely. Hybrid arrangements are regularly reviewed and may be adjusted based on organizational needs and effectiveness in meeting position responsibilities.
