Brown Emergency Medicine is expanding its observation unit at RI hospital and is looking for nonEM physicians (IM Family practice or other specialist with an aptitude for this kind of work) to care for patients with our advanced practice providers.
Currently we are staffing a 10 bed unit with one APP for 17 hrs/day and EM physician oversight. Our goal is to provide 17 hrs/day of dedicated MD coverage to work alongside an APP to care for 1720 patients. With the assistance of an MD we hope to be able to care for more patients with a slightly higher level of complexity/decision making needs than we do currently. Shifts will be day 7a4p) and eve 4pMN) 7 days a week.
What kind of diagnoses are cared for in the observation unit The following diagnoses are managed in the CDU with input as needed from relevant specialists:
Chest pain TIA cellulitis pharyngitis syncope asthma allergic reactions pyelonephritis renal colic anemia case management / social intervention
Our goal is to capture more patients with problems that are outside the above diagnoses but who are anticipated to need only 2448 hrs of care
CDU care starts after emergency care has been performed. The CDU MD will not be providing routine emergency care
Where is the Observation Unit The observation unit is located inside of the emergency department On the off chance a patient decompensates they can be quickly moved back to emergency level of care
What is the work schedule like
A mix of day and evening shifts that add up to an average of 36 clinical hours/ week
A full time employee would work on average 45 days/week
As the unit runs 24hrs x 7 d/week a full time FTE should expect to work every other weekend
There is no on call.Overnight issues (MN7a) will be covered by emergency physicians
