Job Description

The South West Aboriginal Medical Service (SWAMS) is a non Government Health Service based in Bunbury which provides a variety of health services to Aboriginal people in the South West of Western Australia. SWAMS delivers a wide range of community programs and has a strong growth strategy through partnership opportunities and future community development.

SWAMS is currently seeking to recruit a Midwives to join their dynamic Child & Maternal Health Team in either a casual or permanent capacity. The Midwife will provide comprehensive antenatal and postnatal care to the Aboriginal women of the greater Bunbury Region. A key component of the role is to work in partnership with other maternity providers to ensure women receive timely and culturally appropriate care with the aim of closing the gap in maternal health outcomes.

The role of the Midwife working within a multidisciplinary team incorporates the following activities: unsupervised clinical practice coordination of care health promotion patient advocacy collaborative patient management research communication and accurate and timely documentation. SWAMS staff strive to implement best practice Primary Health care to the people of the South West and to coordinate multidisciplinary care planning internal and external referral including referral for specialist care and allied health. This is done through coordination of the patient journey both in the clinic and the community.

The below criteria must be addressed in your application:

Essential Criteria

  • Successful completion of a Bachelor of Nursing/Midwifery qualification or equivalent
  • Registration with AHPRA as an Endorsed Midwife in Australia
  • Minimum of 2 years fulltime or equivalent experience as a Midwife across the pregnancy intrapartum and postnatal spectrum.
  • Possess excellent clinical skills
  • Demonstrated organisational and time management skills along with an ability to adapt to changing needs
  • Demonstrated ability to plan develop implement and evaluate nursing care programs in a primary health setting
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people
  • A demonstrated understanding of the unique issues effecting and impacting upon the health of Aboriginal people
  • Experience skills and knowledge in multidisciplinary teamwork and conflict management
  • Sound written and oral communication skills
  • Working with Children Check.
  • Willingness to cover a 12month Birthing on Country Midwife role. Involves 24/7 oncall model 7 days per fortnight.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience in Community or Aboriginal Health
  • Current immunisation provider certificate or a willingness to complete the immunisation course on commencement of employment
  • Experience using Communicare or similar electronic patient information and recall systems to document patient care and generate reports.
