Job Description
The duties of the international student advisor go beyond advising students. They entail a full complement of responsibilities that are necessary to ensure the running of a complicated student service operation including some weekends nights and holidays. This position assists the Assistant Director at the English Language Institute and International Programs with a wide array of administrative and student services functions initiates and organizes student events/programs both on and off campus manages and coordinates many facets of the International Year Program. This position is part of a bargaining unit and is represented by the union SEIU Local 200United.

Responsibilities
Serve as Designated School Official working with the US Government Student and Exchange Visitor Information System SEVIS to generate I20s for visa issuance. Must be cognizant of US immigration rules and regulations in particular those affecting F1 and J1 visa holders. This includes verification of documents financials personal statements passports payment information and processing for applicants and dependents. Must remain current on regulations as rule revision occurs frequently. Organize and promote ELI activities and events including booking/reservation services. Act as chaperone on field trips and at events. Coordinate scheduling and ordering food for special events and meetings. Maintain inventory of office supplies and order materials as necessary. Manage all English Language Institute ELI inquiries (phone email social media). Manage ELI general email and respond to any emails inquiring about programs offered. Correspond with a range of audiences (parents students instructors government & nongovernment organization reps education agents Syracuse University personnel across campus vendors and landlords). Manage applications for all programs. Communicate with applicants about questions missing documentation and the application process. Maintain applications and student records in several different systems (PeopleSoft Access Slate SEVIS . Create admission letters and packets when student is determined admissible. Advise and maintain contact with students throughout the application process and enrollment for all programs. Assist students on a variety of topics including academic options financial matters and personal concerns (housing US laws NYS drivers licenses landlord contracts medical issues etc.. Monitor student academic progress. Be the main contact for all students. Organize and promote ELI activities and events. Act as chaperone on field trips. Coordinate scheduling and ordering food for special events and meetings. Provide support to arriving students (provide airport/bus station transport) acclimate them to housing take shopping for necessary supplies etc. Oversee conversation groups and mentor programs including mentors schedules activities and expenses.
