JOB SUMMARY:

The Division of Social Sciences at Columbia College invites applications for an Assistant/Associate Professor of Social Work position beginning August 2025 with a strong teaching focus.

Columbia College is a liberal arts college that is committed to creating a learning community that values diversity and inclusion. We seek candidates who will be innovative in teaching leadership and research while building collaborative relationships in the College and the profession. This position is a ninemonth fulltime tenuretrack appointment in Columbia SC. The standard teaching load is twelve credit hours for each of the fall and spring semester. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to design and deliver courses in a variety of formats including online and hybrid modalities and is expected to teach core courses and specialized courses in Social Work Practice Child and Family Intervention Group Processes Social Welfare Policy etc. This position also includes Program Director responsibilities and resources and summer teaching opportunities. The candidate is expected to have flexibility in class scheduling to meet the needs of the college. Faculty members are expected to participate in faculty governance and academic program activities and to engage in service as well as scholarship and professional development.

Qualifications

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Key responsibilities of this position include teaching at the BSW level (with the possibility of future MSW levels) curriculum and program development pursuing grant opportunities academic student advising and participating in department/college/university/community service.
  • Candidates should demonstrate a strong commitment to studentcentered pedagogy social justice and engaged learning and have facetoface teaching online teaching and course development experience.
  • The successful candidate will have demonstrated leadership ability through teaching scholarship curriculum development administrative experience and other academic and professional activities in the field of social work (CSWE 2023 p.1. The Bachelor of Social Work Program Director will work directly with the Chair of the Social Work Department and the Dean of the Division of Social Sciences to lead accreditation efforts for the Social Work program.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Masters degree in social work from a CSWEaccredited program (or a CASWEaccredited degree recognized through an MOU with CSWE or an ISWDRESevaluated degree).
  • At least 2 years of postmasters degree experience in social work.
  • Previous fulltime experience with instruction in social work education.
  • Commitment to working as part of a collaborative team.
  • Passion for motivating students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to a campus climate that supports equity diversity and inclusion.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with prior college teaching experience and familiarity with Learning Management Systems (LMS) such as Canvas.
  • Must have some familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Desired Candidates should have an earned doctorate by the time of their appointment. All required documents must be completed for the application to be reviewed.
  • Experience with CSWE accreditation standards and processes.
  • Experience with programming and curriculum development and management.
  • Experience with online teaching and/or distance education programs.
  • Experience in coordinating and implementing programs in an educational setting.
  • Record of excellence in teaching scholarship and service.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to plan organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to meet schedules and timelines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; excellent interpersonal skills.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Requires sedentary work that involves walking standing lifting carrying pushing and pulling some of the time andrequires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and the ability to exertup to 10 pounds of force on a recurring basis or routine keyboard operations.
