Position Summary

The English instructor is a dynamic educator with experience qualifications and ability to teach corequisite developmental and introductory courses in college writing.

Faculty members at Blue Mountain Community College (BMCC) create a culturally diverse learning environment that employs best practices in teaching and learning through various delivery modes in order to meet current and future educational needs of the communities served by the College. Faculty at BMCC bring to their classrooms and committees expertise and experience that provides an outcomesbased interdisciplinary curriculum that utilizes alternative pedagogies and learning technologies promotes collaborative work skills contributes to student success supports the College and its communities and contributes to the success of the College in achieving its mission. Guided by principles that emphasize educational programs and student success especially in learning and continuous improvement we envision BMCC as a premier learning organization that is in the forefront of community college education. Performs all functions and activities within the guidelines and philosophy set forth in the BMCC Mission Vision and Strategic Plan.

Essential Functions

  • Design format and deliver curriculum for introductory courses in writing from basic composition through all levels of freshman composition to include corequisite classes.
  • Deliver course content facetoface and both synchronous and asynchronous distance formats.
  • Provide regular and substantive feedback to all students especially in distance education courses.
  • Continually work to improve curriculum and teaching by staying current in trends in best practices in Community College education and the use of technology in the classroom.
  • Integrate interdisciplinary and global perspectives into course curriculum incorporating appropriate inquirybased learning or undergraduate research opportunities where appropriate.
  • Maintain uptodate knowledge of the needs of adult learners in the classroom.
  • Adopt teaching practices that foster learning in and out of the classroom.
  • Provide students with a course syllabus the first class period of each quarter clearly stating all required elements including but not limited to learning outcomes grading processes attendance requirements nature of assignments or requirements and required texts.
  • Use the adopted learning management systems in teaching.
  • Collect data to assess learning based on course outcomes; use assessment data to make improvements in course curriculum and adopt teaching practices that foster learning for students.
  • Provide regularly scheduled and posted office hours for student advisement and course related consultation. Maintain hours of work on campus.
  • Advise and mentor students to ensure satisfactory academic progress.
  • Observe all policies of the Board of Education and/or administration regulations and procedures as they apply to the instructor as a member of the College faculty and as a BMCC employee.
  • Follow the highest ethical and professional standards of the teaching profession and promote the best interests of the students and the College.
  • Participate in departmental meetings faculty meetings and other teams committees or planning activities to promote the educational goals of the college and its students.
  • Represent the College in the community and provide community service to benefit thediscipline and the College.
  • Participate in collegewide plans and activities to recruit students and to improve student retention and completion.
  • Facilitate the success of individuals representing a broad range of academic socioeconomic cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to pluralism and the ability to work effectively in a diverse work environment.
  • Strengthen relations and collaborative activities with K12 (Early College Credit) and baccalaureategranting colleges including participation in the colleges dual and early credit programs.
  • Maintain an annual Professional Development Plan with the Office Instruction.
  • When required mentor new fulltime and part time faculty.

Other Requirements:

  • This position is assigned to the Hermiston campus and may be required to travel to instruct at other centers or to attend meetings/conferences; valid drivers license required.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience

  • Masters degree in Writing or Composition

OR

  • Masters degree in a closely related field that includes graduate credits in writing or composition from an accredited college or university with specific training in teaching composition.
  • Previous postsecondary teaching experience.

Preferred Additional Qualifications

Preference will be given to those individuals who are qualified to teach in an additional discipline.

  • Specialization in writing and reading developmental education
  • Writing Center experience.
  • Experience teaching technical writing and/or accelerated developmental writing sequences.
  • Experience using distance education instructional technologies and modalities.
  • Three 3 years instruction and curriculum development experience preferably in a community college.
  • Experience with teaching composition to students who are English Language Learners.
  • Fluency in Spanish is desirable.

Salary: Per Faculty contract salary scale
