GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Under general supervision carries out all policies and performs all tests in accordance with the departments standard operating procedures. Works independently in an efficient and organized manner to assure accurate results and records. The work requires a professional level of knowledge to read and interpret accurately test results used by physicians in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Performs complex laboratory tests and procedures on blood and other body fluids according to laboratory policies.
2.Prepares samples and reagents for testing according to laboratory policies.
3.Responsible for the accuracy interpretation and reporting of all test results according to laboratory policies.
4.Performs routine maintenance on equipment and quality control for all reagents.
5.Keeps accurate records of quality control maintenance and workload data according to laboratory policies.
6.Refers problems and/or unusual results to appropriate parties and documents all corrective action procedures undertaken in the Chemistry Laboratory.
7.Performs clerical and support services as needed such as answering the telephone calling STATS and alert values to the appropriate department or clinician disposing of contaminated specimens control of inventory etc.
8.Participates in proficiency testing of unknowns and internal and external continuing education programs to keep current of developments in their field.
9.Works under time constraints and with the awareness that errors could be fatal to the patient.
10.Is responsible to be aware of JCAHO National Patient Safety Goals and to comply with BWH Hospital and Laboratory policies and procedures.
11.Performs other duties as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1.Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology from an accredited college or university
OR
2. Other qualifications as described in the Federal Register 42 CFR Subpart M 493..
3. MT (ASCP) registration or equivalent preferred.
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
1.Must have a high level of analytical ability and judgment to relate test results to normal or pathological states to resolve technical equipment problems and interpret quality control data.
2.Must possess visual acuity to distinguish fine gradations of color and/or texture and manual dexterity sufficient to work with delicate instruments.
3.Must have the ability to work independently evaluate situations and act appropriately.
4.Must possess interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with coworkers physicians other hospital personnel and other outside contacts.
5.Must have neat and orderly work habits.
6.Must have the ability to pay careful attention to detail and to adhere to written protocols.
7.Must be able to remain calm and efficient in stressful situations.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1.Busy stressful Clinical Laboratory environment.
2.Exposure to infectious blood urine and other body fluids
3.Work requires frequent standing walking and/or occasional lifting or carrying of supplies.
4.Noise level is high due to continuous operation of lab equipment.
