Job Description

Position Purpose

  • Assume leadership and supervision for small groups of high school students participating in a nonresidential precollege summer program.
  • Provides nearpeer mentoring individual and group academic career and personal advisement to program participants.
  • Mentors will escort students on campus at all times including classes labs meals on and off campus field trips/activities; lead recreational activities and workshops; chaperon college tours.
  • Mentors are expected to be responsible for the academic growth development and physical wellbeing of the participants.
  • They are required to attend several events including preemployment mentor training allstaff orientation daily mentor team meetings weekly staff meetings and all program activities and events.
  • Additionally mentors will receive compensation for the extra responsibility of serving as the daily bus monitor for Upward Bound MathScience (UBMS) as well as for other duties as assigned.

  • Must be a team leader yet be able to work well within a team.
  • A high level of maturity motivation and responsibility isrequired.
  • Ability to develop positive working relationships with students faculty and staff.
  • Must be able to maintain a friendly supportive and professional representation of theprecollege programs with parents families and the public.
  • Must be able to serve as apositive nearpeer role model for students.
  • The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to guide and mentor students.
  • Experience in providing support for the unique challenges students face is essential.
  • The candidate should also have a proven ability to provide relevant assistance that aligns with the individual needs of students to help them succeed academically and personally.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Will be required to complete FBI/BCI background clearance process.
  • Valid Ohio Driver License required.
  • First Aid/CPR and lifeguard certification strongly preferred but not required
  • Candidates who have faced similar barriers and challenges as program participants will be given preference.
  • Ideal candidates should have experience in laboratory science and hold a degree or background in a Science Technology Engineering Math or Health field.
  • Applicants should have completed at least two semesters of postsecondary education.
