This is an INTERNAL POSTING open ONLY for current employees of the NC Department of Revenue

The Office of the Taxpayer Advocates Identity Theft Group is currently recruiting for a Revenue Tax Technician. This position handles technical tasks relating to processing tax information. It also promptly responds to telephone calls and correspondence from taxpayers who have been affected by identity theft impacting their Individual Income Tax returns. In resolving identity theft issues this position must be able to collaborate with other Divisions within the Department to address issues such as offsets garnishments and other forms of auto attachments adversely affecting the taxpayer. The position must listen carefully to the taxpayer to ensure that they gather all of the information needed to ensure that the issues are properly addressed. Employees in this position must be able to communicate with taxpayer representatives such as accountants CPAs and others authorized to receive information regarding the account. The position must compose letters to taxpayers to obtain additional information and/or to notify them of changes to their accounts based on information received. This position also assists the Examination Division with review items. Reviews return transactions which pass the transaction validation process via ITAS; Computes penalties and interest; determining if a bill refund or credit must be created; checking the return against review rulesstandards defined by the Department which a return must meet in order to be acceptable; halting processing of unacceptable returns and sets them apart for review; completing processing of returns which meet acceptable standards and approves bill refund or credit requests. The Revenue Tax Technician promotes educates and assists the taxpayer and/or their representative in filing and paying taxes by using the Departments eservices applications via phone email fax mail and internet support assistance.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

  • Must be familiar with the flow of work through the Department in order to identify processing problems and to locate returns and reports
  • Precise knowledge of ITAS including all inquiry and maintenance functions; communication with administration officers and revenue officers and knowledge of the Departments document handling systems and processes
  • Possess an understanding of business and accounting principles
  • Good interpretation and communication skills
  • Familiarity with taxation principles and terminology
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
Management preference:
  • Two years experience with the Department
  • Familiarity with multiple tax schedules
  • Experience with a high volume of phone calls

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate degree in Business Administration Accounting or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year work experience preferably in an accountingrelated environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
