Job Description

The Associate Director of Communications and Marketing in the Office for Inclusion and Diversity (OID) at Virginia Tech will partner with OIDs Director of Communications and Marketing in overseeing the units editorial content and will serve as the primary writer for the OID communications and marketing team. The position will will regularly research write and edit content for various platforms that convey the values of diversity equity inclusion and belonging in the Virginia Tech community and will partner with the Director on the development and evaluation of a strategic communications and marketing program for the office and align those activities with universitywide communications marketing and branding initiatives.
The Associate Director will manage and execute communications and marketing plans for the organization and will create marketing plans for assigned projects/initiatives.
The Associate Director will collaborate with the offices leadership team including the Vice President; leaders of the many programs across OID; Communications and Marketing (C&M) colleagues from across campus; Advancement colleagues; and faculty staff and students to align and achieve OID and university objectives.
The Associate Director will collaborate with others on the OID and C&Ms team to ensure all channels are being utilized to increase engagement and participation across platforms. will generate news and feature stories as well as marketing and communications copy for print web and social media to support strategic priorities
The Associate Director is an administrative/professional faculty member and reports to the Director of Communications and Marketing. The Associate Director must be committed to advocating on behalf of the offices mission and will partner with other communications and marketing professionals to tell the stories of DEI initiatives in the Office of Inclusion and Diversity. The Associate Director may supervise student and/or professional staff and represent the OID communications and marketing team in the absence of the Director.
The position is based at the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg Virginia.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors degree in English communications journalism or a related field; or equivalent training and/or professional experience
Professional experience as a writer reporter or communicator with a portfolio of work that exhibits strong writing and editing skills and attention to detail
Experience working with content management systems
Demonstrated ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
Demonstrated commitment to equity inclusion diversity and belonging
Preferred Qualifications
Professional experience managing social media platforms for an organization
Experience in photo and/or video creation
Experience working with graphicsediting software such as Photoshop and videoediting software
Graphic design experience
Higher education experience
