Job Description

Associate Professor or Professor CS Phase I/Developmental Therapeutics Clinical Trials Program Head

The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Fred Hutch) and the University of Washington (UW) invite nominations and applications to lead the Phase I Developmental Therapeutics clinical trials program. The position will be dual appointed with a primary faculty appointment in the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutch and a secondary appointment in the UW Department of Medicine Division of Hematology and Oncology. The position will report to the Senior Vice President (SVP) of the Clinical Research Division at Fred Hutch and the Division Head of Hematology and Oncology at the UW.

We seek a visionary leader to head our Phase I Developmental Therapeutics Program focusing on innovative therapies to provide hope and healing to cancer patients. This Program Head will lead and oversee the development and of earlyphase clinical trials for novel cancer therapies. This role is crucial in translating groundbreaking research into clinical practice ensuring the safe and efficient evaluation of new treatments. The successful candidate will partner with leaders of the Fred Hutch immunotherapy integrated research center and cellbased therapy team to develop and execute an institutional early phase trial strategy. The Program Head will foster strong collaborations with translational researchers and clinical investigators at UW and Fred Hutch and will forge partnerships with biotech and pharmaceutical industry partners to grow the phase I program assets and advance our mission of delivering transformative cancer therapies to our patients.

The Program Heads overall responsibility will be to maintain and expand our Phase 1 clinical trials program in collaboration with our immune therapy and cellbased therapy teams. Specific tasks will include 1 providing leadership in designing implementing and managing earlyphase clinical trials; 2 working on a team to oversee appropriate selection and placement of phase I trials 3 coordinating the infrastructure needed for optimal implementation of phase I studies including research nurses data coordinators regulatory affairs tissue acquisition and biostatistical support; 4 working with medical oncology and other faculty to assure patient accrual to studies; 5 direct care of a portion of the study patients in addition to the faculty members standard of care patients; and 6 outreach to community oncology providers to enhance access to Phase 1 trials. The candidate may also specialize in the treatment of a cancer subtype in which case they could maintain a subspecialty clinic that is separate from their role as the Phase I Program Head. The incumbent will serve as an academic clinical and educational leader charged with organizing directing and expanding the research efforts for an established team of clinical researchers involved in conducting phase I trials. Responsibilities include assisting with faculty recruitment as well as oversight and mentorship of faculty leading Phase I trials. Teaching responsibilities will involve oversight of advanced practice providers and fellows during inpatient and outpatient rotations and delivery of informal teaching sessions and formal lectures to providers and the general medical community.

Appointment at Fred Hutch would be at the rank of associate or full professor in the Clinical Research Division of the Fred Hutch. Appointment to the fulltime faculty at the UW would be at the rank of associate or full professor without tenure due to funding. Academic appointments at the University of Washington will be commensurate with experience qualifications and academic rank. Associate and full professors hold indefinite appointments that both align with a 12month service period (July 1June 30. Faculty with 12month service periods are paid for 11 months of service over a 12month period (JulyJune) meaning the equivalent of one month is available for paid time off.

Opportunities exist for joint and/or affiliate appointment in the Fred Hutch Divisions of Public Health Sciences Translational Science and Therapeutics Human Biology Basic Sciences or Vaccine and Infectious Disease depending on mutual interests. Fred Hutch and University of Washington faculty engage in teaching research and service.

The successful candidate will be appointed in the Clinician Scholar track and will spend approximately 30 of time on clinical care based on the candidates interests (and institutional need). The remainder of the incumbents time will be protected for research administrative oversight of the Fred Hutch Phase I clinical research programs teaching and mentorship for the first three years after which the incumbent would be expected to cover at least half of their salary each year through grants contracts or clinical work.

Strong candidates will demonstrate evidence of both leadership of Phase I research and clinical excellence.

Applicants must have:

MD/DO degree (or foreign equivalent)

Board certification in medical oncology (or foreign equivalent)

Eligibility for medical licensure in the state of Washington.

In order to be eligible for University sponsorship for an H1B visa graduates of foreign (nonU.S. medical schools must show successful completion of all three steps of the U.S. Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or equivalent as determined by the Secretary of Health and Human Services.

The ideal candidate will have a record of and primary interest in Phase I research as demonstrated by peerreviewed publications grants and/or clinical trial experience.
