Job Summary:
The Saint Louis Zoo is seeking a skilled and detailoriented Fleet Technician to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment. This includes golf carts utility task vehicles (UTVs) fullsize vehicles dieselpowered vehicles small engine equipment heavy equipment trailers and specialized machinery. As a key member of the Facilities Management Division this position plays an essential role in ensuring the functionality and reliability of the Zoos transportation and operational equipment while supporting the Zoos mission core values and three keys.
Key Responsibilities:
Vehicle & Equipment Maintenance and Repair:
- Perform routine maintenance tasks including:
- Inspections and diagnostic evaluations
- Oil changes and filter replacements
- Tire rotations alignments and pressure checks
- Checking and refilling fluid levels (coolant brake fluid transmission fluid power steering fluid etc.
- Transmission flushes and maintenance
- Battery testing installation and replacement
- Headlight taillight and turn signal replacements
- Diagnose and repair vehicle components such as:
- Spark plugs ignition systems and sensors
- Brake pads rotors calipers and hydraulic systems
- Wheel bearings axles and suspension components
- Fuel systems hoses belts and filters
- Electrical and electronic systems
- Perform maintenance and repairs on dieselpowered equipment including troubleshooting fuel injection systems exhaust treatments and engine performance issues.
- Conduct routine diagnostic tests using industrystandard tools and procedures.
- Inspect vehicles to ensure compliance with Missouri state emissions and safety regulations.
- Perform preventative maintenance based on manufacturer recommendations and fleet maintenance schedules.
- Keep detailed records of inspections repairs and maintenance through the Zoos CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System).
Fleet & Equipment Operations:
- Operate inspect and assess the performance of various vehicles and equipment including but not limited to:
- Vehicles: SUVs trucks vans passenger vehicles and trailers
- Utility Vehicles: Golf carts electric utility vehicles (EUVs) RTVs and UTVs
- Heavy Equipment & Machinery: Aerial man lifts scissor lifts skid steers backhoes front loaders tractors and forklifts
- Small Engine & Landscaping Equipment: Chainsaws hedge trimmers trimmers mowers power brooms blowers chippers cultivators/tillers and jetters
- Other Powered Equipment: Generators pressure washers compressors and portable welders
- Conduct test drives equipment assessments and performance evaluations following maintenance or repairs.
- Transport vehicles and equipment for service or contracted repair as needed.
Shop & Safety Compliance:
- Maintain a clean safe and organized work environment.
- Adhere to OSHA safety guidelines and proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Ensure tools machinery and equipment are maintained in safe working condition.
- Follow all Saint Louis Zoo policies and procedures as outlined in the employee handbook.
- Communicate effectively with the Fleet Manager and other Zoo staff regarding repair needs maintenance schedules and fleet availability.
- Serve as a point of contact for fleetrelated issues in the absence of the Fleet Manager.
- Maintain a working knowledge of evolving automotive industry standards and best practices.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree or trade certification in automotive technology preferred.
- Proven experience as an automotive mechanic with expertise in vehicle diagnostics mechanical electrical and electronic systems.
- Ability to obtain an OSHA 10/30Hour Training certification.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to excellence.
- Good attendance record and strong work ethic.
- Versatility and flexibility to adapt to changing priorities.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a Missouri Class E Drivers License (for Missouri residents).
- All successful candidates for this position will be required to undergo a criminal background check and a drug test. As this is a safetysensitive role a negative drug test result is mandatory. The drug test screens for five substances including .
Physical Requirements & Work Environment:
- Ability to push pull bend squat stoop and twist frequently throughout the day.
- Capable of lifting carrying and loading up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to work in varying environmental conditions including exposure to inclement weather dust heavy machinery and hazardous chemicals (proper PPE provided as required).
- Work will take place in both an indoor shop environment and outdoor settings.
