Reporting to the Director of the PreProfessional Advising Center (PPAC) and joining the PPAC team the Health Professions Advisor will perform a variety of advising programming and administrative functions to assist in the daily operations of the PreProfessional Advising Center. The advisor will provide students with guidance support advising and coaching as students EXPLORE the health professions PREPARE for and go through the competitive APPLICATION process for medical school and other health professional schools. The advisor will help with the delivery and coordination of premed/prehealth programming events resources and outreach.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Health Professions Advisor will work with the PreProfessional Advising Center (PPAC) to conduct 1:1 and group prehealth/preprofessional advising and coaching for students interested in exploring preparing and applying to health professional schools. The advisor may work with students from differing majors and grade levels. The advisor will maintain student records complete notes and provide follow ups pertaining to student goals and initiate prepare resources for students administrators and faculty.
This position advises students interested in the health professions that may come from varying majors on the appropriate pre requisite courses needed to apply to the students chosen professional school and to be on track for entrance exams (MCAT DAT etc) and admissions requirements for medical and other health professions schools.
The advisor helps students find opportunities to develop as a prehealth student and to become a competitive applicant for a health professional school. This individual will promote experiential learning opportunities clinical shadowing research and other preprofessional related opportunities to students.
The advisor will work closely with students going through the medical school (and other health professional school) application process providing students with proactive information resources application timelines review of personal statements and complete review of application materials. The advisor will monitor students progress towards completion of the medical and health professions school application process
Assists in the development and delivery of prehealth programming events and workshops. Conducts data collection and analytic support assessment to measure effectiveness and student satisfaction with current programs and events
This advisor will collaborate with other advisors admissions registrar department chairs faculty deans and other university personnel and represent PPAC to internal and external constituencies. This includes acting as a referral for students to other campus support services offering data trends on student performance and recommendations participating in committees as well as broadening student learning by enhancing an inclusive and supportive environment through community engagement and collaborative partnerships.
This individual will attend and participate in Open Houses Admissions Day events and programming in representation of the Professional Advising Center on weekends and evenings when needed.
Assists with monitoring the of the PPAC email account the PPAC weekly ENewsletter student outreach and the PPAC social media page
The PPAC advisor works within the PPAC team to support the of the PPAC goals and the daily functions of the center.
Required Qualifications:
Masters Degree from an accredited college or university.
Minimum of two years of professional experience working in a higher education/medical education setting or similar organization; preferably in advising counseling student services or program development
Desired Qualifications:
Masters degree in a healthrelated profession Counseling Higher Education Administration Leadership or Education from an accredited college or university.
Familiarity and experience working with premedical and/or prehealth students.
Familiarity and experience with STEM academic programs.
Experience with program development and student outreach
Familiarity with current understanding of core concepts values and competencies of Academic Advising.
