Salary/Position Classification
- $52000 annual dependent on experience 12 month contract.
- 40 hours per week
- This position will work onsite the Grand Forks ND campus.
Purpose of Position
The Department of Chemistry is seeking a 12month postdoctoral research fellow to conduct research on the development and testing of new methods and algorithms for solving challenging quantum chemistry problems on future quantum computers. The initial appointment will be for one year and is fulltime and benefitted with potential for renewal for a second year pending annual review of performance and continued availability of funding.
The Department of Chemistry in Abbott Hall at the University of North Dakota is wellequipped for ongoing research performed by individual faculty and is funded by external funding from the National Science Foundation ND EPSCoR PRF ACS and other agencies. Abbott Hall houses 29 laboratories and classrooms over 30 faculty and student offices including space for modern teaching and research facilities. The lab has access to several computing resources including at UND Computational Research Center and ACCESS national computing grid.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Develop methods and algorithms focused at solving challenging problems in quantum chemistry using quantum computers.
- Implement and test algorithms for their usefulness in science considering their accuracy and resource requirements on future quantum devices.
- Work on external software such as IBMs Qiskit Pennylane AWS Braket etc.
- Develop inhouse software (mostly in Python using libraries)
- Analyze results with PI and draft manuscripts for publication and proposals for external grants.
- Present research at academic seminars and conferences
- Mentor junior team members
Required Competencies

Minimum Requirements
- Ph.D. in theoretical/computational chemistry quantum computing material science or a related field
- Demonstrated evidence of publishing in peerreviewed journals
- Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in highquality research in at least one of the following topics: 1 quantum chemistry or material science calculations 2 software development in quantum sciences 3 computational method development research 4 quantum computing algorithms noisemitigation errorcorrection etc.
- Experience in programming (Python is preferred)
- Experience in use of opensource software
