Iowa Department of Transportations Mission is Making Lives Better Through Transportation. To accomplish our Mission the person selected for this position will demonstrate actions and behaviors guided by the Iowa Department of Transportations five CORE values: Safety First People Matter Customer Focused Servant Leadership and Integrity Without Exception.
Location: Ames
Shift Requirements: 40 hours per week; Monday Friday; Compressed work week is permissible; Extensive travel withinstate is expected but generally according to your own schedule; Overnight stays are optional; Telework may be possible after a sixmonth training period however still expect to spend time in the office to retrieve hard files. The amount of travel time is about the same amount of time in the office (or remote site as approved) doing paperwork.
As a RightofWay Agent 2 your duties will include but are not limited to:
- Conducting field reviews for billboard applications. This involves operating a state vehicle equipped with an electronic measuring device and walking on varied terrain including ditches containing tall weeds water insects or deep snow.
- Operating an IPAD that has a collectorapp for capturing field data on advertising signs.
- Researching the rightofway limits for the site by retrieving survey plats highway plans and old strip maps.
- Creating and assembling a packet of information and forwarding it to a lead worker along with a recommendation to approve or deny the permit application.
- Patrolling for illegal signs placed along the primary highway system.
- Checking county assessor sites like Beacon and Vanguard for property ownership information.
- Initiating correspondence with the owners of illegal signs by using the approved templates.
- Working with owners of illegal signs to achieve compliance or removal of the sign; sending removal instructions to DOT District Staff when efforts have failed with the owner.
Dont have any experience or knowledge
Relax and be prepared to be trained. We are looking for an individual that will take the time to learn the process and welcomes feedback for improvement along the way.

Minimum Qualification Requirements
Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelors Degree and two years of Right of Way Agent experience in real estate appraisal property acquisition real estate sales or management relocation assistance right of way engineering or other real estate or development support activity of comparable level;
ORan equivalent combination of experience and education substituting of one year of the required fulltime experience in real estate appraisal property acquisition real estate sales or management relocation assistance right of way engineering or other real estate or development support activity for one year 30 semester hours) of the required education to a maximum substitution of four years;ORan equivalent combination of experience and education substituting one year of the required fulltime experience in fieldcommissioned sales work engineering survey highway construction inspection or as the manager of a business for one year 30 semester hours) of the required education to a maximum substitution of four years;ORan equivalent combination of experience and education substituting satisfactory completion of any American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers Course Society of Real Estate Appraisers Course American Society of Farm Managers and Rural Appraisers Course or American Right of Way Association Course or its equivalent for one year 30 semester hours) of the required college education with a maximum substitution of four years;OREmployees with current continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes eighteen months of fulltime work as a RightofWay Agent 1.
