Under the general supervision of the Director Clinical Education and Patient Safety; the Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurse (WOCN) is a consultant for wound fistula management ostomy continence care and education. The WOCN is a resource for the ordering and proper utilization of specialty pressure redistribution products.

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Responsible for communicating educating and monitoring changes to clinical practice and expectations including reviewing documentation and providing additional support to staff.
2. Collaborates with the nursing leadership team in the strategic planning implementation evaluation and revision of systems to support and enhance the competence autonomy and accountability of the nursing staff including defining nursing standards practices and educational needs of patient and nursing staff.
3. Assesses plans implements evaluates and revises patient plan of care with regards to wound fistula ostomy and continent care issues.
4. Provides consultation direct assistance and education to nursing staff physicians and other health care professionals.
5. Makes recommendations to the physicians for wound care orders and provides evidencebased research as needed
6. Trains and supports appropriate clinical staff to effectively assess wounds recommend appropriate protocols and advocate with physicians.
7. Manages and advises on ostomy issues and performs preand post op teaching support and stoma siting as needed.
8. Provides education for clean intermittent catheterization (Memorial Campus).
9. For educational programs maintains required data records and statistics for administrative regulatory and evaluation purposes.
10. Provides basic wound care orientation to all newly hired nursing staff.
11. Provides ongoing inservices and training related to wound care and ostomy care.
12. Documents patient/significant others response to instruction and ability to provide care as needed.
13. Addresses and implements a plan to prevent/treat peristomal skin complications.
14. Assists in establishing standards of care and protocols.
15. Interfaces with Materials Management regarding the wound care formulary and specialty bed purchase or rental products with regard to the selection of related pressure redistribution products.
16. Provides telephone consults for patients home care and other nursing facilities.
17. Participates in the precepting of affiliating professional students residents and serves as preceptor to WOCN students as needed.
18. Attends WOCN related educational programs locally regionally and nationally as able.
19. Keeps self and staff informed of current research in areas of clinical specialty.
20. Works with vendors and Materials Management to maintain the most appropriate costeffective wound care formulary.

2. Attends variety of meetings conferences seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.

6. Maintains regular reliable and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:


License/Certification/Education:

Required:
1. Bachelors degree in Nursing.
2. Current Massachusetts Registered Nurse licensure and registration.
3. Current Board Certification in Wounds and Ostomy care.

Experience/Skills:

Required:
1. Must possess a sound knowledge of nursing principles procedures and standards of practice as determined by state and federal regulations.

Unless certification licensure or registration is required an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Departmentspecific competencies including agespecific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions

Work is considered medium frequent walking standing and potential exposure to hazardous materials including blood and bodily fluids. Position requires work indoors in a patient care environment.
