Responsibilities
Responsible for the maintenance and care of municipal street and park trees equipment and allied operations.Climbs trees using safety saddle ropes safety belt and spurs. Operates aerial lift trucks and telescopic boom cranes in order to service trees; operates power pruners power saws sprayers chippers generators trucks dump hoists and other special tree service and nursery equipment;removes stumps using specialized motorized equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
EducationGraduation from high school (or G.E.D..
Experience
Must have 2 years of experience in a tree maintenance operation INCLUDINGone year of experience using an aerial buckettruck and/or performing tree maintenance activities at above ground level heights using a rope and saddle chainsaw and wood chipper.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid drivers license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.
Within 150 days of appointment must obtain and maintain a valid Ohio Class A Commercial Drivers License (C.D.L. with a Tanker Endorsement including the qualification to operate a vehicle with air brakes and any other endorsements required by the State of Ohio.
Out of state residents must have equivalent licenses from their state of residence within the prescribed 120 days of appointment.
Promotional Qualifications
Must be a fulltime permanent or parttime permanent employee in pay grade 115 (Wage) or below pay grade 25 (Clerical) or below or equivalent and been employed for 6 consecutive months by the City of Dayton in a classified Civil Service position. Identical scores will be broken by 1 seniority and 2 random selection method.
Open Competitive Applicants
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a jobrelated medical examination and providing documentary evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity. Identical scores will be broken by a random selection method.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
Incumbent is expected to stay abreast of current technological methods and haveknowledge skills & abilities including but not limited to the following areas:
- Working knowledge of the methods materials and tools used in shade tree service and relatedarboricultural work.
- Working knowledge of the safety precautions practiced in shade tree maintenance work using specializetree service equipment.
- Ability and willingness to learn a wide variety of skilled tasks required in shade tree service and maintenance work.
- Ability and willingness to acquire skill in climbing trees working at excessive heights near high tension lines and use of special tree service equipment.
- Ability to learn and observe proper safety precautions.
- Good physical condition and health sufficient to perform tasks requiring strength and agility at heights under varying weather conditions.

Examination dates and times are subject to change.Calculators will be provided for the Civil Service examination. Applicants appearing on the Promotional eligible list shall be considered for appointment prior to those on the Open Competitive list.

Background Check
A background investigation is required prior to employment.All candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position including current city employees seeking transfer promotion demotion etc. into a classified position.
Drug and Nicotine Testing
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
