Dorchester County Public Schools is currently accepting applications for the position of Substitute Custodian. The position involves school and office cleaning work completion of minor maintenance tasks as well as groundskeeping. The incumbent must be a team player who takes ownership of responsibilities and works to ensure a clean and safe building. This position is considered essential.
DUTIES:
- Perform daily duties assigned per shift schedule including but not limited to: scrubbing and cleaning rest rooms (including toilet bowls sinks floors walls bathroom partitions and trash cans) trash removal vacuuming refilling dispensers for soap towels and tissues.
- Inspect and perform other tasks as needed: dust scrub strip and wax hard surface floors as needed burnish shampoo and dry carpeted surfaces wash windows and furniture wash fixtures empty pencil sharpeners high dust damp mop wet mop spot mop and otherwise provide all housekeeping services to maintain a clean wellmaintained building.
- Monitor level of cleaning supplies and fill as needed.
- Report building/system deficiencies to head custodian.
- Perform minor maintenance and repair tasks as required (for examplechange light bulbs change air filters painting etc..
- Provide routine maintenance and inspections of emergency lights ground fault receptacles roof drains and playground equipment (inspect as needed maintain and dress safety surfacing etc..
- Perform grounds related tasks as required to keep facility presentable and safe including but not limited to: snow and ice removal from sidewalks and entranceways policing grounds for trash power washing exterior walls and monthly inspections of fencing and gates.
- Secure building at end of shift including locking all doors activating alarm system turning on all required security lights etc.
- Assist with moving and transporting furniture equipment boxed textbooks athletic equipment and other supplies weighing up to 75 pounds either manually or with mechanical assistance.
- Assist the building principal teachers and students in tasks as may be required to provide the best environment for the educational process.
- Assist with special custodial and maintenance projects as needed.
- This position is a direct report to the head custodian at work location.
- Performs other duties as assigned consistent with the classification and as assigned by the head custodian or
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
- Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license and have a reliable means of transportation to work regardless of weather conditions. A drivers record check may be necessary to allow use of Board owned vehicles.
- Knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment heating systems principles of electricity and mechanics.
- Understanding of written and verbal instructions manuals warnings etc. related to supervision safety proper use of equipment and chemicals.
- Ability to accept directions from supervisors including head custodian or assigned lead custodian.
- Proven ability to work cooperatively with others or independently.
- Ability to climb a ladder and work overhead.
- Ability to work for long periods of time while standing.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions as required.
- Ability to work weekends or evenings as required.
- Ability to use cleaning chemicals and equipment in a safe approved manner.
- Ability to perform lifting carrying or other related manual labor.
- Ability to follow instructions and learn to operate standard machines used in custodial and grounds work in a safe effective manner.
- Experience in commercial maintenance.
- Be dependable responsible helpful and able to work successfully with other people from diverse backgrounds.
- Proven ability to work independently with little direction.
- Proven ability to perform duties and interact with public clerical professional and executive staff in an appropriate manner; and
- Proven ability to take complete ownership of responsibilities.
