Position Description
Middleton Place National Historic Landmark
Middleton Place is a historic rice plantation located along the Ashley River in Charleston. Once home to a signer of the Declaration of Independence as well as hundreds of enslaved people today Middleton Place is a National Historic Landmark featuring Americas Oldest Landscaped Gardens a historic house and stableyards where we tell the stories of those who once lived and labored here. Their stories are a microcosm of American history.
Position Summary
The Director of Education at Middleton Place Foundation will lead and develop educational programs and initiatives for the Foundation. This role will focus on providing impactful learning experiences for diverse audiences fostering partnerships with schools and colleges and advancing Middleton Places educational mission.
Reports to: Vice President of Museums FLSA Status: Exempt
Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in Education or Public History
- Minimum of 5 years in museums or cultural site education with at least 3 years in a leadership or supervisory role
- Proven experience in developing delivering and evaluating educational programs for diverse audiences
- Strong knowledge of historical and cultural interpretation methods and best practices
- Strong knowledge of Lowcountry history with a focus on African American history
- Demonstrated ability to engage and inspire learners of all ages and backgrounds
- Experience in developing and teaching education and interpretive programs
- Strong public speaking ability and excellent presentation skills
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as part of a team. A creative selfstarter who is well organized detail oriented and able to multi task.
Work Environment and Physical Demands:
- This position is based at Middleton Place which includes outdoor environments gardens and historic structures.
- Must be able to work outside in various weather conditions when necessary
- Must be able to walk and stand for extended periods of time
- Occasional evening and weekend hours may be required for special events or programming
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
- Works with the VP of Museums to develop comprehensive educational and interpretive strategies that align with MPFs mission.
- Supervises Education Coordinator who manages the K12 school group programs.
- Engages new audiences by developing innovative educational programs and expanding existing programs meeting curriculum criteria.
- Develop metrics to evaluate programs continually improving interpretation and methodology ensuring positive accessible and inclusive experiences for visitors.
- Collaborates with VP of Museums Education Coordinator and interpretive team to develop and implement interpretive materials and programs establishing an annual programming plan.
- Prepares and manages departmental budget.
- Identifies educational grant opportunities and collaborates on applications.
- Coordinates with other departments (marketing guest services etc. to ensure programs are marketed and staffed.
- Builds and nurtures partnerships with local schools and universities to extend the reach of educational programs.
- Develop outreach initiatives to engage local underserved and underrepresented communities making Middleton Place more accessible to all.
- Leads with a positive attitude promoting teamwork within and beyond the Education Department while maintaining high standards of professionalism.
- Stays current with trends in museum education pedagogy and best practices in the field
