DEPARTMENT Clinical Research Unit Neurology
Neurology is a developing specialty within Alfred Health and recent investment has produced significant growth in this area particularly with regard to research and clinical trials. Neurology at Alfred Health consists of inpatient units and a range of specialised outpatient clinics.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Research Assistant is sought to contribute towards the research efforts of Alfred Health and Monash University and to the specific goals and priorities within the Epilepsy Neuromodulation service. The goals of the Epilepsy Neuromodulation service are to: improve understanding of epilepsy and epileptogenesis find novel neuromodulationbased treatments for epilepsy improve existing neuromodulationbased therapies for epilepsy improve epilepsy diagnostics improve epilepsy outcomes and reduce and prevent morbidity and mortality in epilepsy. The Research Assistant will work on cuttingedge research projects and prospective clinical trials of neuromodulation therapies neurodiagnostics devices and fundamental neuroscience. This will involve (but not be limited to) identifying suitable patients for inclusion in research projects and clinical trials organising appointments and assessments as per the study protocol and schedule conducting study visits managing device/consumable inventory and requisitions liaising with industry partners and meticulous record keeping and trial documentation. The role will involve both prospective and retrospective data collection curation processing and analysis to support internal review provide preliminary data for grant applications and data for scientific publications.

- Maintain a safe working environment for yourself your colleagues and members of the public.
- Escalate concerns regarding safety quality & risk to appropriate staff member if unable to rectify yourself.
- Promote and participate in the evaluation and continuous improvement processes related to stroke research.
- Comply with Alfred Health mandatory continuing professional development requirements.
- Comply with requirement of National Safety & Quality Health Service Standards and other relevant regulatory requirements contained within Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED
Education & qualifications
- A Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) or an honours or higher degree (MPhil or PhD) in science (or a directly related field; e.g. biomedical engineering)
- Experience in clinical or preclinical research
Knowledge and skills
- Demonstrated computer literacy and proficiency in the production of highlevel work using standard software such as Microsoft Office applications and other standard communications tools (Zoom Teams email and messaging platforms etc).
- Capability and willingness to learn new packages as appropriate (University and health service specific software research ethics/administration/governance software data collection and analysis tools project management tools etc).
- A demonstrated capacity to work in a collegiate manner with other staff in the workplace.
Desirable
- Experience in human clinical trials research is highly desirable including: research ethics and governance administration; participant recruitment scheduling and communications; conducting clinical trials visits; trial monitoring.
- Experience with research database software and in particular REDCap
- Specific experience and interest in neuroscience or neurology
- Clinical experience including in inpatient or outpatient settings; and in particular in neurology surgery or implantable devices.
- Specific advanced skills relevant to the research including: biostatistics bioengineering quantitative methods programming and coding (Matlab & Python) signals processing image processing and artificial intelligence.
- An interest in pursuing further work or study in the field including honours and higher degrees (MPhil/PhD) and/or postdoctoral work.
