You will be updated with latest job alerts via emailThe Licensed Practical Nurse is a licensed nurse who provides competent compassionate nursing care to patients and families under the direct guidance and supervision of a physician.
The LPN reports directly to the LPN Nurse Unit Leader and indirectly to the Medical Director of Phototherapy.
Responsibilities include the administration of UVA UVA1 PUVA (oral) and UVB (narrowband) combination light treatments to patients as well as phototesting.
Employee must also be able to render directed UV therapies such as Selective Ultraviolet Phototherapy in addition to performing all tasks delegated to assist in the evaluation management and treatment of patients.
Review patient charts and physician orders to ensure appropriate adherence to protocol.
Calculate duration of light exposure from physicians orders.
Monitor patients adherence to treatment schedule to prevent adverse reaction to therapy.
Adjusts treatment dose downward in the event of mild erythema burning missed treatment etc.
Ensures that all safety procedures are followed during each treatment (e.g. protects nipples uses safety drapes properly makes sure male patients use groin protection makes sure each patient wears protective goggles during treatment unless of course specifically instructed to do otherwise by the managing physician ensures that eye protection is used by PUVA patients for 24 hours after each treatment etc..
These procedures are to be followed by patients of all ages: pediatrics (toddlers preschool age) teenagers young adults middle age adults and elders. Tests new patients for sensitivity to light exposure (that is performs MEDs in the case of UVB treatments and MPDs in the case of PUVA treatments as directed by the doctor).
This also includes the performance of MEDs for other doctors in the department when needed as part of light testing or photopatch testing.
Greets patients in an appropriate timely and professional manner.
Prepares patients for treatment and explains procedures and prepares a schedule of treatments.
Examines patients skin for any unusual reactions skin irritation etc.
Reports any significant findings to physician.
Renders and documents treatment administered in patients flow sheet. Calculates cumulative doses.
Renders all types of UVB phototherapy PUVA and UVA1.
Participates in all aspects of Phototherapy including administering treatments to patients receiving light therapy as part of a clinical trial. Has knowledge of current research protocols.
Validates patient demographic information and ensures that the proper procedures are followed by directing the patient to the Registration Referral Center for registration updates.
Verifies insurance information including the coordination and tracking of managed care insurance referrals or authorizations by utilizing payer websites or calling insurances directly.
Participates in the referral verification process as soon as these referrals come in.
LPN must be able to complete referral/authorization processing in Epic Cadence. Collects copayments for insured patients and payments from selfpay patients as well as posts payments directly into Epic Cadence.
Generates a billing charge file to the billing office at the close of each business day Responsible for maintaining appropriate inventories.
Provides administrative services when needed.
Ensures that patient is in compliance with protocol schedules routine laboratory work eye exams and other services required for treatment.
Answers phototherapy telephone and listens to voice mail messages at a minimum of twice daily.
Helps to maintain the information sheet given to patients about schedule variations in our unit as well as disseminates this information to patients.
Maintain the rules of the unit and ensure that patients who have missed doctors visits get seen or else have their treatments stopped.
Each week meters boxes to determine energy output levels.
Maintains condition of equipment used in the department including the annual changing of the bulbs.
Participates in meetings of clinical and administrative personnel as requested. Monitors the cleanliness and appearance of the Phototherapy Unit which may require a working collaboration with Environmental Services as necessary.
Appropriately documents all treatments in phototherapy database and uses LMR for documentation of all patient interactions.
Documents in LMR all UVA1 treatments.
In addition to documenting in LMR the number of pills given to each patient for each PUVA treatment including lot number and expiration date.
Participates in crosscoverage for the other members of the unit in vacation coverage.
Able to do all light test patients performing all light tests as directed by the doctor and performs patch testing as well as photopatch testing in accordance with standard procedures.
Be able to administer ALA and the blue light part of all photodynamic treatments providing comfort for the patient supervising the treatment and reviewing postop instructions.
At the time of patient appointment to bring the patient from the waiting room to the exam room and prepare the patient for the physical examination.
Takes brief intake history and Obtains/records vital signs when needed. Setsup for skin biopsies and surgical procedures as well as assisting with these procedures when working in General Dermatology.
Provides wound care and postoperative instructions per forms. Performs suture removals.
Administers medications within parameters defined by the Dermatology Service after successful orientation including the administration of biologics as specified by doctors orders; performs nursing procedures within the parameters defined by the Dermatology Service.
Triages patient phone calls. Inform patients of laboratory and pathology reports.
Ensures that all necessary therapies are administered as scheduled by the physician. Provides patient education about proper use of medications. Troubleshoot routine/nonroutine problems and takes measures to correct/handle the issue.

Current Massachusetts licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse required CPR certification required Graduate of an approved LPN program required Maintains and updates clinical knowledge and skills.
