1. Bachelors Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
Or
Bachelors degree in a chemical physical or biological science from an accredited college or university and 2 years training/experience in high complexity testing in the respective specialty.
Or
2. Other qualifications as described in the Federal Register 42 CFR Subpart M 493 Medical Technology or equivalent from an accredited college or university.
3. MT (ASCP) certification.
4. Three years of laboratory experience.
5. 2 3 years of experience in Special Hematology Hb Electrophoesis Hba1c Blood Parasites and other Special Heme testing preferred.
1.Must have expertise in designated specialty.
2.Must have a high level of analytical and technical ability to operate complex laboratory equipment maintain their performance and resolve technical equipment problems.
3.Must have a comprehensive understanding of analytical techniques ability to relate test results to normal and pathological states and ability to interpret quality control data.
4.Must have understanding of computer technology and its applications in a clinical laboratory including quality control statistics.
5.Must possess interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with coworkers physicians students and other hospital personnel.
6.Must be well organized able to work independently and able to handle stressful situations.
7.Must be able to perform as a senior team member providing leadership guidance and direction to other Technologists.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1.Laboratory environment.
2.Exposure to odors infectious material and other hazardous materials.
3.Exposure to contact with needles broken glassware and other sharp material.
4.Visual strains encountered while using a microscope.
5.Frequent standing and occasional lifting of supplies is required.
6.Noise level is high due to continuous operation of laboratory equipment.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
1.Supervises Medical Technologist and Technicians on holidays and assigned weekends and in the absence of a supervisor.
2. Responsible for daily operation of specialty area.
GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
Following established procedures and policies performs various analysis on body fluids using complex instrumentation and/or standard manual methods. Possesses and maintains a professional level of knowledge necessary to assure accurate test results. Under the direction of the Supervisor and/or Technical Director is responsible for daily operation of one of the three specialty laboratories (Special Hematology Special Coagulation or Flow Cytometry).
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1.Responsible for daily operation of designated specialty area.
2.Performs various analysis of blood and other body fluids using complex analytical procedures and instrumentation and/or established manual methods in designated specialty area.
3.Rotates in routine hematology on weekends and holidays performing the duties of a Senior Medical Technologist including supervisory responsibilities.
4.Reviews tests for accuracy. Verifies results according to established protocols and enter results into patient files.
5.Provides assistance to Medical Technologists rotating in designated specialty laboratory and determines priority of work.
6.Troubleshoots and resolves problems with assistance of Supervisors and/or Technical Director.
7.Performs and documents quality control testing. Reviews all quality control results in designated specialty lab for accuracy and completeness. Assists supervisor in establishing quality control assay values and standard deviations according to established protocols. Maintains accurate quality control records.
8.Complies with all technical standards and policies established by the Technical Director.
9.Responsible for training new staff clinical students and clinical pathology residents rotating in area.
10.Participates in proficiency testing as necessary.
11.Participates in internal and external continuing education programs. Keeps current regarding developments in technical instrumentation and analytical techniques in the designated specialty area.
12.Participates in research development and implementation of laboratory procedures as requested. Makes recommendations as needed.
13.Adheres to all established safety and infection control policies. Follows all OSHA guidelines.
14.Follows all National Patient Safety Goals as developed by JCAHO.
15.Monitors inventory of supplies and orders as needed for assigned area.
16.Performs clerical support and other duties as required.
