Cardiac Surgery/Cardiology Research Laboratory at
This 32hour a week position is well suited forthose interested in pursuing a career in veterinary medicine. The applicant must be selfdriven reliable and motivated. This position offers the candidate the chance to further their education and handson learning in the academic medical field. This is an outstanding opportunity for applicants interested in research. The opportunity includes observation and participation in large animal openheart surgeries and cardiac catheterization procedures as well as learning valuable techniques and skills including anesthesia creation of surgical models intraoperative monitoring measuring cardiac function and ultrasound imaging of the heart.
Responsibilities of this position include assisting the surgeon in complex cardiac procedures to create heart failure models including cardiopulmonary bypass recovering the animals in the critical postsurgery time period and maintaining anesthesia and surgical records to comply with USDA guidelines. Most studies require multiple survival surgeries. The individual will also be trained in presurgical anesthesia induction intubation and the transport of the animal to the operating room as well as medicating the animals for multiple days pre and postsurgical procedure and maintaining the animal record. Other responsibilities will be setting up and organize a Fluroscopy suite and a sterile operating room. The individual will be trained in calibrating monitoring and acquiring physiological cardiac data and in the basics of ultrasound imaging of the heart typically performed with a cardiology fellow. Responsibilities of this position also include pre and post operative care meticulous record keeping product inventory and acquisition interaction with animal facility manager and veterinarians and lifting and handling small and large animals.

Instructing and supervising fellows in performance of cardiac ultrasound studies
Record keeping on each animal by protocol and project
