Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
We are a highvolume pathology and molecular diagnostics laboratory with a mission to provide personalized cancer care to all of our patients including rapid comprehensive genetic analysis of tumor specimens from a wide variety of sources (PROFILE). This position will require a skilled independent professional acting under the supervision of a pathologist to perform a wide variety of tasks in processing of the full range of human surgical pathology specimens. The principal responsibilities for this position will be threefold: 1 Proper acquisition of tissues received in the Frozen Section Laboratory from the operating rooms to optimize nucleic acid isolation by the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory for genetic testing. This will include accessioning gross description dissection and tissue sampling/selection. 2 Computerbased review of archived pathology reports to select optimal tumor blocks or other materials for mutational testing. 3 Support the Frozen Section Room/Tissue Banking operations including but not limited to routine dissection technical and operational tasks functioning as a member of the Frozen Section Room Surgical Pathology team. Serve as primary liaison between the OR suite and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1)Accessioning preliminary gross description and dissection and sampling/selection of tissue specimens obtained in the OR Suite for nucleic acid isolation. The selected tissue will be appropriately prepared to optimize nucleic acid yield and reviewed with a pathologist to document the percent of tumor cells in the selected tissue by frozen section or other methods. Tissue sampling will ultimately be supervised by facultylevel pathologist.
2)Daily review of the PROFILE webbased worklist including review of consented patients pathology reports to select most appropriate specimen for mutational analysis and triage of cases to an administrative team for retrieval of materials from the BWH pathology archives and referring hospitals. 3)Liaison with Molecular Diagnostics Staff to ensure rapid processing and transfer of tissue accurate documentation/data entry of tissue samples and to maintain patient confidentiality as appropriate. This includes attendance at weekly working meetings with pathologists administrators IT personnel and laboratory staff to ensure optimal flow of specimens.
4)Maintains diagnostic viability of specimens. Ensures correct patient labeling of all materials received.
5)Describe dissect sample and select tissue sections from a wide variety of surgical specimens and document required data for downstream genetic testing either on paper forms or electronically (preferred).
6)Evaluate distribution of cases consented for tissue acquisition and adjust hours to accommodate within reason.
7)Optimize and document standard operating procedures for optimal fresh or frozen tissue processing in the OR for downstream nucleic acid isolation in concert with the Molecular Diagnostics Staff.
8)Develop and maintain a system for the filing of glass surgical slides or touch preps used for documenting sampled tissue.
9)Performs all duties of Pathologists Assistant including but not limited to: a)Gross description and dissection of a full range of surgical pathology specimens. b)Demonstrates astute clinical judgment when handling patient material and reports. c)Assist senior staff by assuring consistent and proper acquisition of tissue from specimens for departmental or interdepartmental purposes such as clinical studies teaching and research. d)Troubleshoot problems with mislabeled and/or missing specimens work with senior staff and other departmental personnel as necessary as well as other clinical staff in the hospital. e)As necessary provides coverage for Tissue Bank Pathologists Assistant. f)Active development of and participation in resident teaching conferences and activities. g)As necessary in the frozen section lab select tissue from surgical specimens section in a cryostat and stain these sections for review and stat intraoperative diagnosis by the pathologist
10)Instruct residents medical students and less advanced technicians in the gross description dissection sampling of surgical pathology specimens and specimen cryotomy.
11)Photograph and xray all pertinent specimens as directed by a pathologist for diagnostic study as well as for research and clinical studies.
12)As required assist pathology staff in preparation of case materials or photographic material for clinical or research conferences or special studies. 13)Maintains established department policies procedures and objectives including the areas of quality assurance safety environmental and infection control.
14)Follows all Patient Safety Goals defined by The Joint Commission and related BWH Laboratory and Hospital Policies. 15)Perform all other duties and responsibilities as directed.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Degree from NAACLS recognized university Pathologists Assistant program (Masters degree) and AAPA fellowship eligible preferred.. PA(ASCP) certification and 2 or more years of experience highly desired. NonPA(ASCP) certified candidates with a minimum of 10 years of experience are eligible. Experience in an academic medical setting highly desirable.

SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED
Extensive knowledge of the basic sciences especially anatomy. Extensive knowledge of surgical pathology and autopsy techniques.
Ability to summarize complex clinical data.
Extensive comprehension of medical terminology.
Good working knowledge of histologic procedures.
Must possess excellent dissection technical skills.
Ability to perform frozen sections.
Ability to work well in a team setting
Ability to function independently.
Familiarity with basic computer programs for data entry searching for clinical information case identification and retrieval.
Strong interpersonal skills and judgment to permit interactions with pathologists other physicians technicians secretaries and other administrative staff. Must possess strong organizational skills.
