QUALIFICATIONS: High School graduate or equivalent necessary

Knowledge of switchboard practices paging procedures and equipment

POSITION TITLE: Switchboard Operator
DEPARTMENT: Telecommunications
REPORTS TO: Manager Telecommunications
PURPOSE OF POSITION: Answer switchboard console for the entire Spaulding Hospital Cambridge Inc. and staff Information Desk
SPECIFIC DUTIES: Responsible for all hospital emergencies:
a) Emergency code phone ext. 2222
b) Emergency paging of codes/fire alarms
c) Responsible for all alarms located in the switchboard room
d) Log all alarms/codes
Assist patients in making telephone calls
Contacting OnCall personnel after hours
Contacting Security as needed
Responsible for being plugged into the switchboard and answering all calls as soon as possible
Knowledge of carrier procedures
Paging Announcements (General and Emergency)
Knowledge of various computer software such as MS Word Excel Meditech
Maintain various carrier logs
Ability to turn on/off patient phones and maintain phone logs
Ability to handle high volume switchboard:
1. Average calls per day are 3300
2. 12 incoming lines
3. Paging
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be able to see hear speak and work with hands.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Small confined area. Cannot leave work area without securing a relief operator. Will often be dealing with people under stress.
