Job Description:
The Special Education Teacher develops implements and continuously refines an instructional program tailored to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities. This role ensures the highest quality educational experience by fostering academic success socialemotional growth and personal development in a supportive inclusive environment.
Qualifications:
Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in Special Education.
Strong knowledge of individualized education plans (IEPs) instructional strategies and accommodations for students with disabilities.
Proficiency in implementing differentiated instruction and behavior management strategies.
Commitment to professional growth reflective teaching and responsiveness to student needs.
Experience with assistive technology and tools to support diverse learners.
Ability to collaborate effectively with students families colleagues and external service providers.
Performance Responsibilities:
A. Professional Performance
Adhere to all school and district policies state regulations and ethical standards.
Actively participate in IEP meetings contributing expertise to develop and monitor individualized plans.
Foster a culture of inclusion collaboration and mutual respect among staff students and families.
Engage in continuous professional development related to special education laws instructional practices and technology.
Maintain accurate and confidential records including IEPs progress reports and communication logs.
Communicate effectively with students parents staff and other stakeholders ensuring clarity and professionalism.
Participate in schoolwide responsibilities and extracurricular activities as appropriate.
Manage time effectively balancing instruction planning and administrative responsibilities.
B. Instructional Performance
Interpersonal Relations:
Establish a positive inclusive and supportive classroom culture that celebrates student individuality and fosters mutual respect.
Build strong relationships with students showing empathy and dedication to their success.
Empower students to take ownership of their learning and develop selfadvocacy skills.
Subject Matter:
Demonstrate knowledge of the curriculum and align instruction with IEP goals and state standards.
Adapt instructional methods to address students cognitive emotional and physical needs.
Planning & Materials:
Develop and implement comprehensive IEPs with measurable goals and objectives.
Prepare lessons and activities that engage students and meet their specific needs.
Integrate a variety of materials including assistive technologies and sensory tools to support learning.
Instructional Techniques & Delivery:
Employ evidencebased teaching strategies to enhance engagement and learning outcomes.
Provide accommodations and modifications to ensure access to the general education curriculum.
Regularly assess student progress using formal and informal methods and adjust instruction accordingly.
Classroom Management:
Create and maintain a structured safe and nurturing classroom environment.
Implement positive behavior interventions and supports to address behavioral challenges.
Use proactive strategies to promote student engagement and minimize disruptions.
