Collects and processes blood specimens for testing in the laboratory.
Reports to: Phlebotomy Supervisor
Under the supervision and direction of a medical technologist and under CLAI88 guideline performs pre and post analytical test processing areas of the clinical lab which may or may not include the following:
A. Placing specimens on the automated analyzers for analysis
B. Processes microbiology specimens for routine culture analysis
C. Performs waived and moderate testing platforms
E. Logging and distribution of patient test specimens from the processing areas in the lab to the respective test areas
F. Entering patient demographics and test orders into the automated chemistry analyzer
Labels processes and delivers specimens for testing.
Collects ordered specimens from patients using ageappropriate techniques.
Maintains scheduled and nonscheduled equipment maintenance and medical supplies.
Utilize computer system for data entry and monitoring workflow
Accurately registers patients using appropriate method and registration procedures.
Performs routine department functions such as answering the phone in an appropriate and timely manner taking/delivering messages and transferring calls as needed faxing and copying.
Maintains a clean and organized work environment
Perform and record quality control results for occupational medicine as required
Direct workflow lunch breaks and breaks of phlebotomists in the absence of a Lead or Supervisor
Order supplies for phlebotomy and fills orders from other other departments/clients as directed
Active team member during inventory
Stocks laboratory supplies and manages expiration dates on supplies
Oversee the reference lab send outs for proper collection and processing according to reference lab protocol
Oversee the pathology specimens for proper collection and processing according to pathology protocol
Oversee the STATE LAB Specimen are properly collected and processed according to STATE LAB procedures
Assist in training new team members
Store monthly reports properly
Minimum EducationHigh school diploma or equivalent Required
Minimum EducationGraduate of a Program in Discipline Preferred
Formal Phlebotomy program with a minimum of 40 hours of clinical experience/certification Preferred
Required SkillsCertification:
BLS certification from approved American Heart Association or American Red Cross training center must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
CPT Certification from an approved phlebotomy certification association or similar professional certification (e.g. MA PCT EMT) Preferred
Required SkillsRequires critical thinking skills decisive judgment and the ability to work with minimal supervision. Must be able to work in a stressful environment and take appropriate action.
Minimum Work Experience
Two years of phlebotomy/accessioning experience in a hospital setting or 6 months of successful performance at Sumner Regional Medical Center or enrolled in a clinical laboratory science institution
