Job Description

Job Summary

Position is responsible for assisting with the safety of handicapped or students with severe mental and emotional challenges loading unloading and monitoring while enroute to a school placement within another County in Virginia. Individuals may serve as a one on one assistant while students are in the out of county day school.

Essential Duties

  1. Secure each student in his/her location with wither harnesses seat belts wheelchair locks or other safety equipment as needed.
  2. Maintain discipline in keeping with division regulations.
  3. Assist in emergency evacuation drills in keeping with division regulations.
  4. Instruct riders regarding being responsible passengers.
  5. Report personal absences in time for supervisor to secure substitute aide.
  6. Know the physical and/or emotional handicap of each student on the bus.
  7. Be alert and exercise good judgment concerning emergencies disables vehicles and irregular special requests by parents of riders.

Other Duties

  1. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge Skills and/or Abilities Required)

  • Must hold a high school diploma or GED equivalency certificate.
  • Ability to deal with exuberant and difficult behavioral characteristics of student riders.
  • Ability to lift and/or carry children as required.
  • Ability to administer first aid when necessary.
  • Ability to recognize problems and move quickly to solve them.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements

Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to dial a telephone to enter data into a computer; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 50 pounds; and to bend stoop sit on the floor climb stairs walk and reach overhead. Must be able to drive in a vehicle for extended periods of time and travel out of county on a consistent basis.

Supervision Exercised: Dependent on grade level and subject; may include instructional assistants volunteers tutors.

Supervision Received: Supervisor of Transportation. Other direction and training may be provided by the Director of Special Education and/or her designee.
