Job Description
ASL 101/601 AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE I 4 credits) ASL 101/601 provides an introduction to American Sign Language ASL as a living unique language underlying Deaf culture in the United States. It is designed for students with no background in ASL minimal signing skills or those who studied non ASL manual communication systems (like Signed Exact English). Students will learn basic vocabulary and grammar to participate and understand basic conversations in ASL . The course will also introduce aspects of Deaf culture in the United States.
Responsibilities
Developing and/or updating a class syllabus. Ordering the appropriate books and materials in advance of the class start date. Preparation of lectures projects or other student assignments. Meeting all designated class periods. If you are unable to meet your class due to illness or emergency you should exercise your best effort to reschedule the class or to obtain a substitute. You must also notify the department chair of your absence and of your plan to cover the class. Presenting instruction based on the competencies and performance levels of the course. Maintaining regularly scheduled office hours. Grading student assignments and exams in timely manner. Participating in student recitals or showings. Collect and submit student assessment data for accreditation purposes if applicable. Submitting completed midsemester progress reports and final grades according to University regulations. Providing departmentally sanctioned forms for completed student evaluations. Providing an updated CV annually or upon request of the department or school. Participating in departmental meetings or workshops. Building a positive rapport with students and other faculty.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree required (Masters preferred) in Deaf Education or closely related field. Nonnative signers must demonstrate a high degree of signing competency as indicated by: a 3 score on the American Sign Language Proficiency Interview ASLPI or an Advanced Plus or higher rating on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview SLPI .
