Your Role:

CBC News Network is looking for a creative and key editorial leader to be a Control Room Producer on Morning Live the networks awardwinning morning program.

Based in Toronto this is a oneyear fulltime position scheduled as Monday to Friday 3:15 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Your main responsibility is managing the final of the line plan. Working closely with the Senior Producer you will oversee content communicate with reporters on location and in the field and make sure segments are clean when they go to air. You are up to date on all the live events that may occur during a dynamic fourhour live program and have a plan for how they integrate into the program. This role is critical in fulfilling CBC News Networks mission to prioritize live breaking news that resonates with and is relevant to Canadians from coast to coast to coast.

We are looking for a critical thinker with a strong editorial vision and an audiencefirst mindset. You should be passionate about pitching engaging content ideas bringing your unique experiences and perspectives to the table. You actively consume news programs and video staying curious and open to new ideas approaches and viewpoints. Adaptability is key you thrive in fastpaced environments where you may need to adjust content from hourtohour or even minutetominute. You can meet the everchanging demands whether they be editorial technical or resourcing.

While breaking news is central to our mission you understand the importance of producing programs that balance urgency with captivating stories and meaningful conversations. Youre also someone who understands that every second counts in a morning news program. Were looking for creative treatments to stories that will allow space for variety in content pace and tone.

As a confident editorial leader you are decisive and in constant communication with the Senior Producer and studio technical crew to ensure the show is broadcast according to the editorial plan and abides network branding considerations. Working in an automated TV control room environment you have an aptitude for technology and a high comfort level with newsroom systems.

You have a deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective opinion and experience. You must also have a clear understanding of CBC News Journalistic Standards and Practices.

You are a team player who embraces a collaborative work environment. You thrive in a 24/7 breaking news environment making decisions under pressure and are skilled at troubleshooting. You have excellent communications skills and can act as the point of contact between newsgathers and the editorial teams giving constructive feedback to both. Plus you know how to have fun along the way!

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A university degree or equivalent.

  • Five 5 years of experience of which three must involve work in a broadcast news environment.

  • Superior leadership and coaching skills with the demonstrated ability to mentor and encourage creativity.

  • Highly developed production skills including strong ability to produce a variety of program formats.

  • Experience in pitching stories and translating those ideas into onair segments.

  • Excellent writing vetting and production skills.

  • A team player with excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Superior eye and ear for pacing tone presentation and production.

  • Must be capable of original and creative thought in the production of television news.

  • Demonstrated news judgment under tight deadline conditions.

  • Demonstrated team leader with solid people skills who can direct perform and delegate assignments across editorial production and technical lines.

  • Experience using Vizrt iNews and Media Central.

  • Familiar with Ross OverDrive Automation workflows.

  • Must be able to solve problems quickly independently and ingroup discussions.

  • Ability to perform and willingness to learn other producer roles in the newsroom.

  • Embraces change and experimentation.

  • Lives and promotes the values of an inclusive and respectful work culture.

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of and/or connection to underrepresented communities across Canada.

  • Demonstrates a deep understanding and appreciation of the different cultures opinions and experiences that make up contemporary Canada (new diverse younger audience).

  • Elevates diverse perspectives ideas and differing points of view.

  • Ability to work in a high pressure environment and to tight deadlines.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with CBC Journalistic Standards and Practices.

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns and methods. Although this is a regular scheduled morning shift it may require flexibility with working hours to cover operational needs.

  • Having experience in a live control room is an asset.
