Join our dynamic Compliance Learning and Innovation (CLI) team within Safety Codes Permits and Inspections (SCPI) and play a pivotal role in ensuring the safety and progress of our vibrant city.3 Were seeking a passionate and experienced Senior Safety Codes Engineer to lead our technical staff and champion the administration of the Safety Codes Act while aligning with our citys ambitious vision.
Your work will directly impact projects that support the Authority Having Jurisdiction aligning with crucial municipal strategies like Climate Resilience Healthy City and Urban Places.
What will you do:
- Support and provide guidance through advanced knowledge and technical expertise of acts and regulations including but not limited to the Safety Codes Act and associated regulations the Professional Governance Act the Municipal Government Act and municipal standards and policies on issues which arise within the section branch department or partners within the City
- Maintain indepth awareness of evolving trends and issues related to all fields of engineering practice associated with the safety codes (such as energy mechanical structural electrical and fire protection) the safety codes disciplines and permitting and inspections with a focus on operational consistency and integration between all disciplines and operations
- Represent the SCPI section lead and contribute to corporate goals and objectives related to Energy Green Building and Climate Resilience
- Participate in peer review and assessment of professional work products requiring advanced understanding of Professional and Safety Codes regulations including providing guidance and advice to proponents for alternative solution/variance proposals through bestpractice guidelines such as the SFPE Code Officials Guide to Performance Based Design and Guidelines for Peer Review
- Coordinate implementation of the Safety Codes through working with industry to communicate changes incorporate requirements into building and construction practices and update procedures and policies as needed including the creation of professional work products such as memorandums and technical interpretations
- Provide leadership and direction to a work unit of Safety Codes Officers professionals and associated team members ensuring that operational requirements are achieved
- Provide technical input and leadership into the development of established operational requirements and performance standards including the creation of professional work products
- Represent the section at interdepartmental discussions committees and public meetings
- Perform engineering analysis as required to support technical issues relating to policy procedure and interpretation of safety codes regulations including green building energy modeling fire modeling egress modeling and risk analysis
- Contribute to the development of strategic and long term planning as a member of the CLI section leadership team
- Perform other related duties
- Applicable engineering degree recognized in Canada
- Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng. with APEGA in good standing. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for InterProvincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment
- Demonstrated 7 years progressively responsible engineering experience including in sustainable design and progressively responsible supervisory/management experience of a diverse team for 5 years
- Certified Safety Codes Officer or ability to obtain Safety Codes Officer designation
Skills required for success:
- Proven knowledge and experience with professional regulatory organizations
- Advanced knowledge of the Safety Codes Act and the Citys Quality Management Plan(s)
- Knowledge of energy model preparation
- Superior knowledge of Alberta Safety Codes system including referenced regulations and standards with the ability to translate code requirements into language for nonsubject matter experts
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Excellent technical skills and a demonstrated ability to incorporate technical tools and software in the of daily duties.

- Demonstrated ability to apply and analyse work relative to the goals of the City Plan and/or other administrative policies and plans applicable to Urban Planning and Economy
Assets:
- LEED Certification would be an asset including Accredited Professional Building Design and Construction (AP BDC) recognizing professionals with advanced knowledge in green building practices and with specialization in the LEED for Building Design and Construction rating system
- Building Energy Modeling Professional Certification experience
Conditions of employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license (or provincial equivalent). Must obtain business auto insurance for personal vehicle use on City business
Work Environment:
- This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement with the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite
