PURPOSE OF THE POSITION
A senior lecturer at the School of Philosophy must contribute to the subject groups undergraduate and postgraduate teaching & learning supervision research (within the Focus Area Social Transformation and the Institute for Contemporary Ethics) administration and community engagement within the Faculty of Humanities & NWU strategic aims.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Teaching and Learning
Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Teaching and developing of Understanding the World modules and philosophy modules in various Philosophy traditions (e.g. Continental and African).
The conduct of tutorials practical classes demonstrations workshops student field excursions online teaching and other teaching sessions.
Initiation and development of subject material.
Research
Conduct research and publish articles in peerreviewed accredited academic journals.
Presentation of conference papers.
Supervision of postgraduate students.
Be actively involved in the Institute for Contemporary Ethics.
3. Community Engagement
Involvement in professional associations.
Involvement in community engagement projects of the School of Philosophy the Faculty and the NWU.
4. Administration and leadership
Undertake academic administration on Programme & Module level and on School Faculty and Institutional level.
Consultation with students.
A PhD (NQF level 10 in Philosophy or related field.
A minimum of three 3 years teaching experience in Philosophy.
Experience supervising Masters or PhD students
Evidence of at least 2 accredited research outputs.
KEY FUNCTIONAL/ TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
Knowledge of diverse philosophical ideas and practices.
A proven commitment to teaching and learning including a willingness to become involved in students educational development
and wellbeing.
Knowledge of modern platforms (e.g. whiteboard technology eFundi etc. to enhance the ongoing changing of the learning and collaboration environment.
Knowledge of the appropriate assessment theory and practice to enhance student performance.
Computer literacy in MS Office (Word Excel and PowerPoint) email and internet
Demonstrated ability to conduct and publish peerreviewed accredited academic research as well as to present findings at conferences in the discipline of Philosophy.
Ability to administer modules involving large numbers of students.
Relevant leadership and management experience.
KEY BEHAVIOURAL COMPETENCIES:
Demonstration of language proficiency to function optimally in the various functionally multilingual environments of the NWU.
The ability to function well individually and as part of a team/subject group.
Effective timemanagement skills.
Effective communication skills good interpersonal relations and clientservice orientation.
Good planning and organising skills as well as good report writing skills.
A high level of professional and ethical conduct.
REMUNERATION:
The annual total remuneration package will be commensurate with the level of appointment as advertised and in line with the NWU policy guidelines.
