Description of Job

This fulltime position provides routine and emergency dental care assessment diagnosis and treatment to offenders incarcerated in the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC). This position is responsible for but not limited to the following:

  • Provide professional diagnosis and treatment of oral pathology for offendersin both routine and emergency settings;
  • Provide dental care that includes but is not limited to diagnostic preventive restorative periodontal endodontal oral surgery and prosthetic services;
  • Applyagency and professional treatment standards to develop individual patient treatment plans;
  • Diagnose and treat dental disease of offenders or refer offenders to specialist for treatment;
  • This position may be required to participate in restraining an offender primarily for medical reasons;
  • Communicate with outside providers and internal peersto ensure continuity of care;
  • Collaborate with other health care professionals clinical services staff regarding offender health issue/policies transfers classifications and medical legal concerns;
  • Participate in various decision making committeesto resolve system issues;
  • Assist in developing policies protocols standards or guidelines;
  • Maintainoffenders health records to includedental holds special diets and work restrictions;
  • Respond to offender grievances;
  • Participate in the daily dental clinic operations to includetool control chemical control infection control practices bio hazardous waste hazardous materials and radiation control exposure control regulations;
  • Plan workloads and schedules as well as those of any subordinates;
  • Maintain agency compliance with relevant statutes and professional standards in dentistry;
  • Provide input to supervisors on dental unit policies and procedures dental treatment standards and dental unit budgetary and staffing needs;
  • Provides clinical guidance and direction consultation andeducationrelative to dental assistants performance;
  • Provide supervision of clinical tasks and procedures as required under the Dental Practice Law;
  • Provide daily guidance to the dental care staff for kite log entry and offender appointment scheduling to achieve maximum efficiency in providing dental treatment;
  • Perform dental patient education related to preventative care and self care including appropriate hygiene post dental procedure care signs and symptoms of dental and periodontal disease and signs and symptoms of the need for immediate health dental care.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Licensure: Applicant must possess a current valid Dentist license issued by the Colorado Dental Board.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training to includeEnglish reading comprehension relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

  • Possess the physical ability to successfully complete Defensive Tactics;

    • Lift arms above head and kick as high as own waist;

    • Stabilize another person to accomplish a controlled take down;

    • Use arms palms of hands shins and feet to deliver blows;

    • Withstand impact (slow speed or with a safety bag) on own body from strikes/blows;

    • Swing a baton in a striking technique;

    • Rotate body 90 degrees with feet planted for striking with foot or using a defensive tactic;

  • Will be exposed to Oleoresin Capsicum during Basic Training and will be exposed while on assignment;

  • Must be able to see and hear in order to observe address and respond to potential breaches in safety and security;

  • Seize hold control or subdue violent or ive persons and defend oneself or others to prevent injury;

  • Demonstrate body agility strength of all four limbs and the ability to walk and climb stairs consistently;

  • Work in situations involving ive behavior physical control of another person and/or restraint situations;

  • Deal with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors utilizing tactfulness and a congenial personable manner;

  • Work with people of the opposite sex diverse racial ethnic groups mentally ill and emotionally disturbed offenders;

  • Communicate by talking listening and/or signaling people to convey or exchange information assignments;

  • Work in an environment with fluctuating noise and temperature (hot and cold) which may include working outdoors in inclement weather and/or concrete floor/wall work settings;

  • Willing and able to travel;

  • Willing and able to work various shifts days afternoons graveyards (nights) which includes a rotating shift schedule;

  • TB (tuberculosis) screening is required of all new employees upon hire.
