GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK

The School Security Officer (SSO) is responsible for interacting with the police staff school faculty school administration and staff parents and students to lead and educate students promote safety and promote positive relationships. The officer is assigned to one school but may be placed in any school based on need. The officer serves as a security officer role model and mentor to and for the students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS

The minimum performance expectations may include but not limited to the following functions/tasks:

  • Communicates with coworkers and supervisors;
  • Maintain proficiency in security duties and capabilities;
  • Notify supervisor of any crime or safety issues in the workplace and/or requires intervention;
  • Completes incident reports;
  • Testifies in court;
  • Any duty assigned by principal designees as needed for efficient operations;
  • Conducts surveillance of school buildings grounds and activities;
  • Ensures the security of the school;
  • Enforces established rules and regulations;
  • Monitors students and visitors entering and leaving school grounds; provides information checks identification and parking decals;
  • Patrols hallways stairwells restrooms and parking area throughout the school day;
  • Monitors the loading and unloading of buses;
  • Monitors metal detection at school entrances;
  • Assists with all drills critical incidents and emergency evacuations;
  • Maintains awareness of police and educational issues in the community;
  • Assists in directing and placing of emergency vehicles during medical emergency situations;
  • Issues checkin passes/tardy slips when applicable;
  • Assists in the investigation of threats and other potentially dangerous situations;
  • Contact people by radio when needed;
  • Maintains proper boundaries with students at all times;
  • Provides a good role model in appearance demeanor dress and behavior;
  • Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities;
  • Performs related duties as assigned and in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.

WORK CONTEXT

The SSO works with diverse groups of people. A majority of the time is spent in environmentally controlled classroom settings although assignment outdoors in various weather conditions do occur. Stressors in the assignment include interaction with openly hostile students or parents requirements to meet deadlines and the responsibility for a large number of students with a wide variety of concerns. The work hours range from 7:00 a.m. 10:30 p.m. Work hours are subject to being flexed. Performs responsible protective service work maintaining security and a safe environment at school. Work is performed under regular supervision.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

The SSO officer must obtain and maintain SSO certification.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to provide own transportation to schools throughout the division. Candidate must possess good moral character and is expected to be a role model in and out of the school consistent with the divisions policies. The SSO officer must have good interpersonal skills; enjoy working with young people; have suitable time management skills; be able to work with little supervision; have excellent public speaking and presentation skills; have good report and letter writing skills; and be computer literate.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS

This is work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force consistently to move objects. Work requires standing walking and grasping. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for depth perception visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts and observing general surroundings and activities. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
