Job Description

Work Location: Regional Student Services (Education Centre Newmarket Centre for Leadership and Learning 300 Harry Walker Parkway South Newmarket ON L3Y 8E2

Work Schedule: 35 hours/week (fulltime hours)

Please Note: Travel from site to site will be required.

Thank you for your interest in a career as a Physiotherapist/Occupational Therapist with the York Region District School Board. This application is for temporary/term opportunities. Temporary Positions: This is a position that is available for a period in excess of 30 consecutive working days to replace a permanent employee who is absent on an approved leave of absence (e.g. pregnancy parental educational or medical leave).

Term Positions: This is a position that is available for a period in excess of 30 consecutive working days due to additional funding.

Major Responsibilities:

  • To participate in the preentry screening process for children with exceptional abilities in response to requests from Student Services Coordinators outside agencies or parents.
  • To collaborate with school staff regarding with students in the classroom and individually assess students strengths and needs related to educational programs.
  • To share physical and occupational therapy assessment data with members of the educational team including parents or caregivers and students and appropriate medical and community agencies.
  • To collaborate with the educational team to develop recommendations and strategies appropriate for each student in his/her classroom and school environment.
  • To provide ongoing involvement with students to ensure the continued appropriateness of initial strategies and to modify or expand strategies as needed.
  • To support the development of the Individual Education Plan.
  • To clarify relevant medical information and assessment data from outside services.
  • To provide information relevant to the students medical and/or physical condition.
  • To recommend special equipment as required to meet individual needs in consultation with school personnel.
  • To recommend modifications to school buildings and playgrounds to enable student participation and to meet individual needs.
  • To refer as appropriate to other services and agencies.
  • To carry out other duties as may be assigned by the Principals of Student Services Student Services Coordinators and/or the Superintendent of Student Services.

Education Experience and Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited university physiotherapy or occupational therapy program with a minimum of a Bachelors degree or equivalent.
  • Eligible for registration with the Canadian Physiotherapy Association or The Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists.
  • Physiotherapists must be members of the College of Physiotherapists of Ontario.
  • Occupational Therapists must be members of the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario.
  • Minimum of two years pediatric experience. Strong interpersonal and organizational skills are required.
  • Effective written and oral communications skills interpersonal analytical organizational time management and presentation skills are required.
  • Ability to deal effectively with a variety of individuals and groups both within and outside the Board is required.

Important Information for CUPE 1734 Members:

LA.11.7 Those twelve 12 month employees filling vacancies as a result of their applying to a job posting are to remain twelve 12 months at their position. Ten 10 month employees are to remain in their position until the end of the school year. This requirement can be waived with permission from the Superintendent responsible for Human Resource Services. This does not prevent employees from applying for a position or from applying for a promotion during the twelve 12 month period.

As a condition of employment and In accordance with the Education Act anyone seeking employment or wanting to volunteer must provide a satisfactory police record check. A Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) must be completed by the police services in the jurisdiction in which you reside this is based on your home address (only accepted by police services within Canada); must be satisfactory to the YRDSB and completed within six 6 months prior to the scheduled start date. It is the candidates responsibility to provide the results to the Board upon instruction.

We will accept satisfactory PVSCs that name any other school board and other employers (daycare centers OCT and employers that would require a police check for vulnerable persons) in Ontario and obtained within the last six 6 months.
