Cocurricular

  • Through the fitness and wellness classes personal training services dietitian and rehab/injury prevention services we offer our students the opportunities to achieve and maintain a healthy and balanced lifestyle while at Western Washington University.
  • External partnerships with Extended Education Prevention Wellness Services and Dining Services. Internal partnerships between fitness nutrition counseling and injury prevention services.

Leadership

  • Students have the opportunity to develop their leadership skills through involvement with the Campus Recreation Advisory Council Sport Club Council and the Intramural and Sport Club programs and active engagement in other employment areas.
  • We also offer advanced levels of student employment in areas such as; Personal Trainers Building and Intramural supervisors Youth Camp Counselors Fitness and Swim Instructors.

Student Recreation Fee

The Western Washington University Wade King Student Recreation Center (the Recreation Center) is a selfsupporting auxiliary enterprise of Western Washington University (WWU). The Recreation Center is an open recreation fitness and wellness facility for the benefit of eligible students and associated members of WWU. The facility includes a lap/leisure pool and a whirlpool a threecourt gym with elevated running track a multiactivity court a rock climbing wall weight and cardio areas two group exercise/aerobic rooms locker rooms an injury rehabilitation room a retail food service and lounge area a conference room and administrative offices for Campus Recreation Services. The Recreation Center is located on WWU campus and is supported by a service and activity fee assessed to students quarterly. In addition memberships are available for purchase by faculty/staff alumni and others closely associated with WWU.

Western Washington Universitys Wade King Student Recreation Center is a state of the art facility that has been created and shaped by the vision and support of Western Washington University students. The Recreation Center was one of the nations first recreation centers designed to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)

About the Position

The Western Washington University Head Mens Rugby Coach is responsible for leading all on field aspects of the mens rugby sport club team. This includes teaching and coaching student athletes for successful competition; mentoring and engaging studentathletes for academic success and personal success; assisting with schedule management; supporting fundraising efforts; and developing positive alumni and parent relations.

Position Duties and Responsibilities:

70 Teaching and Coaching:

  • maintain an exemplary standard of conduct which reflects the highest level of professionalism and good judgement
  • provide a teaching and learning environment that is nurturing intellectual and supportive of individual differences
  • assist in the development of strategies and techniques for all phases of the sport to best prepare the team for competition in partnership with student leaders volunteer assistant coaches and other specialist coaches
  • assist in the preparation implementation and evaluation of practice and competition plans that are effective for the sport and congruent with team/individual ability
  • ensure players have clear understanding and respect for the Laws of the Game. Facilitate appropriate application of these laws through effective and regular communication with players and match officials
  • assist in the development and implementation of a team philosophy that is supportive of the educational mission of the university and campus Recreation
  • direct studentathletes assistant coaches and support staff to conduct themselves in such ways that bring credit to the team and WWU
  • identify and seek professional development opportunities to acquire ongoing learning and improvement as coach and leader; including game trends and laws of the game

20 Program Management:

  • Assist student leadership in the development of clear and appropriate team protocols and standards in conjunction with the Assistant Director of Campus Recreation
  • Ensure established team protocols and standards are met and maintained and deal effectively with any breach or conflict as per the Universitys policies and procedures
  • Ensure the team maintains an appropriate standard of discipline both on and off the field
  • comply with institutional and departmental policies
  • be knowledgeable of and comply with all conference rules and regulations.
  • Supervise volunteer assistant coaching staff
  • work collaboratively with department staff
  • maintain appropriate coachathlete relationships
  • develop a positive relationship with alumni and parents of current former and prospective student athletes

10 Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • maintain a commitment to diversity equity and inclusion and a high degree of cultural competence and respect for a wide range of identities and experiences therefore welcoming and supporting all faculty staff and students and expanding access to the WWU experience
  • maintains a safe working environment within and around their facilities and associated equipment and supplies
  • participate in all required assigned training including safety training and will comply with safety rules regulations and protocols
  • effective written and oral communication skills required

This is a parttime 9month position.

Required Qualifications
  • 35 Years Coaching experience at the Club University or International level
  • Demonstrated high level knowledge of Rugby Union with specific regard to coaching athlete development planning and performance technology
  • Proven ability to create a vision establish buyin execute and drive performance to achieve results
  • Proven ability to lead and manage diverse teams and individuals
  • Strong commitment of professional development of athletes and volunteer coaches
  • High level of cultural awareness and capability to adapt to a unique environment
  • Computer literacy relevant to the rugby environment e.g. Excel PowerPoint HUDL Sportscode
  • World Rugby Level 1 Coaching Accreditation or Union specific equivalent; Level 3 preferred
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree or above with preference in education health science sport management sport psychology or related field.
